The Retro Bar 2 George Court, Adelphi, off The Strand, Charing Cross, London, WC2N 6HH (Map)

This paradise in the middle of the theatre district is a great place to meet friends gay or straight. The friendly staff and theme nights(games/rock trivia etc) make for a fun evening, wish it could stay... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“I just love this place, pretentious to say the least, but the doorman are very heavy handed lunatics.”

“After reading some of these comments I feel I had to add my thoughts. My friends and I had the best night ever at the Kiwi Kitchen. Thank you guys, the service was friendly, helpful and attentive. We were quite a demanding group! the food was awesome and better than we expected, it was also really nice that they bothered with letting large groups in, we'd tried to book for 20 of us in three other restaurants all of whom turned us away - guess it's too much work for some! Not the Kiwi's though, even though we couldn't all sit on one table, they didn't mind us moving around and it was a great night! We'll be back. If you book online it does say tables will only be held for 15 minutes!!! ”

“Great atmosphere and comfy seats. My partner and I came for a roast dinner and were surprised by the prices. However, we decided to 'treat' ourselves and associated higher proces with better quality food. My partner and I were disappointed by the portions and although most of the veg appeared fresh, we were quite insulted to be given frozen roast potatoes. Shame.”

“This is a great well price local, lively, reasonable priced with a well-considered food offering. We loved their approach to food sourcing and where else can you find a pub that brews its own beers. Now sit back and enjoy a pint of their refreshing Summer Beer.”

“I was at the Normanby the other night for a few beers by myself as I had some reflecting to do... I was enthralled to engage in some lively debate with the young, red-haired bar owner that really did brighten up my evening. He was ever such a nice chap. Others in the bar seemed to enjoy themselves and the beer tasted great. I may even go as far as to say that the Normanby may become a local. Very friendly!”

“What a gem of a pub. I'm yet to sample its evening menu (which looks amazing), but I frequently grab my lunch from the Deli counter. They have fresh doorstop sarnies £1.75!, hot homemade pies and salads and more that can be taken away! The coffee is of a new level for the area which might'nt be sayng much considering the competition but it is proper basita stuff! I've only had a couple of post-work drinks here but has a great time on both ocassions. My only complaint is the walk to the train but I guess thats a good thing after a couple of pints of Ale... or so my wife may say!”

The Yorkshire Grey, City of London (Bar / Restaurant)
“Seemingly its recently changed hands and although I can't compare with before.. this is a good Pub/Bar or whatever you're supposed to call them nowadays. What I like about the Yorkshire Grey is that it isn't attempting to be anything it isn't and boy this is a big failing with many London Pubs. I didn't have food but there seemed to be a thousand big burgers flying out from the kitchen. I had San Miguel and Pinot grigio... both very acceptable and service was very polite and genuine. Seemingly the lights above the bar came from the set from Nutcracker the movie which is due out Xmas 2008 and Lord Lucan used this Pub as his hideaway ...... the Irish Manager told me so but then again you know the Irish and stories! It seemed believable to be fair. Overall I would say yes... this is a damn good Pub and I will visit it again with friends and eat. There is a really good upstairs function roomed which I cheekily checked out for my 40th..... in three years time. Be good.... Jane Whittaker”

The Windmill, Clapham (Bar / Hotel)
“I spent an evening at the Windmill a few weeks ago and I certainly wasn't disappointed! The pub itself is beautifully decorated - with large, plush leather sofas and candle-lit tables. My friends and I were particularly impressed with our dining table, which was surrounded by fairy lights and immaculately presented. Our food arrived quickly and piping-hot - I tucked into a delicious Morroccan Lamb burger followed by a generous portion of sticky-toffee pudding. After our gorgeous meal we reclined on the leather sofas and drank copious bottles of wine. I absolutely loved the atmosphere in the Windmill and the staff were also polite and warm. My friends and I are already planning our next visit to the Windmill!”

“Tried to go there for a late Sunday lunch and had to wait for a table - fine, I didn't have a booking. But what made me walk out was that the host had no idea of the order that she sat people. When questioning her on this, she knew she had made a mistake but refused to recifiy it and was very rude about it - not good enough really.”

Bar Kick, Shoreditch (Bar / Restaurant)
“One of London's best bars for atmosphere - bohemian and friendly, always a quiet buzz. Quality imported beer, continental style menu with platters etc. The table football tournaments at Bar Kick are a big attraction. Gets very joyful when a big match is on screen. Top place.”

The Royal Oak, Borough & Southwark (Bar)
“Oh Dear! What in Harvey’s name has happened to this pub? Has it changed hands? It has always been a pleasure to visit this pub and receive a warm welcome from the hospitable landlord, Frank, and swap the occasional story and beer with him. However shock and horror upon my return here with my wife yesterday (Sunday afternoon at 5pm) for another anticipated pleasurable visit only to be confronted by a surly foul-mouthed man across the bar professing to be the Licensee and repeatedly shouting at us to "get out” whilst I was trying to politely explain to the barmaid that the bottom of a glass retains the heat for quite a while after the glass has come out of the glasswasher. My explanation was regrettably necessary as the barmaid (whom I had never seen in here before) had accidentally served me a pint of draught mild in a hot glass despite my request when ordering for her to please make sure that the bottom of the glass was cold – a request which the barmaid unfortunately did not appear to understand. Apparent attempts by the other barman to calm down “the Licensee” were to no avail and my wife and I accordingly departed amid further tirades of "get out” from the professed “Licensee” who refused to supply his name. A most unpleasant experience for my wife and I tinged with sadness at the rapid decline in the standard of service at this hitherto much-loved pub.”

“Really nice restaurant. Food tasty, has a slight twist to the original home style Caribbean food though but in a good way and staff real friendly. Good vibe. If you want that Caribbean experience and to sip all kinds of rum Cottons is the place. They even have a dj on the weekend at the bar.”

Red Rooms, City of London (Bar / Club)
“Where do I start. I called the same guy over and over before going to Red Rooms, he confirmed all my friends and family would be OK to enter on arrival. Being that it was my 21st I was really excited only for my brother to arrive and be told he wasn't allowed in without girls, he then returned with two of my friends (girls) just to be told he still couldn't get in. I then tried again with my aunt just to be told he had to be with girls. Obviously my aunt and I just looked at the bouncer like he was blind, I had on hotpants and a low top, you COULD NOT confuse me with a man. Unfortunately he still wasn't allowed in. They then rejected about 8 more of my friends. Even though they were all on the guest list. To make matters worse, 3 drinks came to £30 and the glass was filled with ice. It was practically empty all night and shut 2 hours earlier than promised. All in all, a waste of time!! DON'T BOTHER!!!”

Cubana, Waterloo (Bar / Restaurant)
“Unfortunately this restaurant has to rank as the worst I have ever been to. My friends and I had booked a table, planning a fun evening in what we thought was one of the funkiest looking restaurants around, as it happened a night that started badly, ended in disbelief. Upon arriving, our booking was lost (despite having phoned up only two days before and booking). The waitress was not apologetic but we put this down to her just being in a bad mood. We had specifically booked our table for 6pm so we could take full advantage of the happy hour. Having ordered several jugs of happy hour cocktails we were looking forward to some good food in a relaxed atmosphere. Annoyingly only half of our drinks showed up so 30 minutes later we went to gently remind them, they eventually came. The food came and was pretty tasty. All seemed ok until the bill came: When it arrived - we noticed that two of the happy-hour cocktails we had ordered were charged at full price (£32 vs £17) - when the waitress came over we mentioned this to her, she went to the bar and then came back and said that we had ordered them after happy hour so couldn’t get the discount - it is now that we reminded her that it was the restaurant who had not written down are order originally - she went away again and then came back claiming that "it is on the computer...I cant change the computer" - this in itself was plainly insulting to us and she was not remotely apologetic. ”

“Seriosuly, this is a great bar. But don't go any where near the guys at the bar, or anyone for that matter that refers to women as totty... What is totty anyway - it sounds gross... Get a life, and stop hanging around the door ways of nice bars.”

“Possibly the best beer garden in London. Pleasantly surprised by how good the cocktails were along with the staff wine knowledge. The burgers were fantastic with great sevice to match. As an American I appreciate a bar which shows American sports, which they show all day, every day.”
