Thalassa Restaurant & Bar 110- 112 Chase Side, Southgate, London, N14 5PH (Map)
My first visit of thalassa saw a bad service as the staff were too young and undertrained, but it was clear by my latest visit things had improved dramatically. Mature and well mannered staff greeted me... More

Le Beaujolais, West End (Bar / Restaurant)
“This decidedly french bar is well, french in attitude. A group of us wanted a few quiet wines after a lovely dinner at next door restaurant Souk Bizaar. Near closing time at 11pm, rather than a traditional "we're closing soon" comment, he decided yelling would suffice. Message taken. We left immediately. A horrible end to what started as a great night.”

The Duke of Edinburgh, Brixton (Bar)
“used to be an amazing pub, full of regulars who were great local characters, now seems intent on turning a once great traditional backstreet boozer into a souless gastropub”

The Gun, Canary Wharf (Bar / Restaurant)
“I visited the Gun on Saturday 22nd May 2010 following a stressful week at the coalface. This was my first visit but I was assured that the experience would be a good one having eaten a couple of times at one of their other establishments - the Empress of India near Victoria Park.
However, this was to be a decidedly disappointing experience. Overpriced food and tiny portions were the order of the day not to mention haughty and extremely slow service.
I was slightly confused given that the Empress of India is actually OK (aside from its peculiar Yorkshire puddings) but the Gun doesn't compare to the best gastropubs knocking around such as the consistently excellent Anchor & Hope in Southwark.
All in all, an exceptionally disappointing experience which I will not be repeating. To add insult to injury, the 'voluntary' service charge of 12.5% was automatically added to the bill. This little act of sharp practice made the experience even more disappointing. This was removed when we asked but the presumption that I was going to pay this was certainly not welcome.”

Imbibe, Borough & Southwark (Bar)
“Imbibe Bar is excellent, I have been drinking here for many years. The Staff are all extremley friendly
and look after you really well. I have started holding Events here also, and we have had an excellent time. The Drinks are great, and the food was excellent.
If you are in the Southwark or Waterloo area then I promise you should give Imbibe a go......and if its on a warm summers evening you can chill and drink in their beautiful beer garden, surrounded by comy furniture and a pretty garden!
One of my top bars in London, so I cannot recommend highly enough!! :)”

The Dartmouth Arms, Kentish Town (Bar)
“The Dartmouth Arms is my local boozer and I love it. The interior has recently undergone some refurbishment and it's lost a bit of character, but makes up for it with the new chef, who cooks delicious food in the tiny kitchen upstairs. Awesome and well worth it!”

Canteen, City of London (Restaurant)
“I work near Canteen so I go in there quite regularly. I always leave full and satisfied but wouldn't rate it as my favourite venue. The food is good but I prefer to have more exciting offering on the menu. Still, it's convenient for work and I love Spitalfields Market.”

“The best fish & chips i've ever had! HUGE portions, chunky proper chips and cracking piece of fish. I couldn't finish it and that was only the small portion! I dare someone to come out with a better fish & chips in London, this is the best!”

Cape, City of London (Bar)
“I’ve been to take Cape on more than one occasion and it never disappoints. I never have to wait for food longer than 20 min and if its busy I make sure I call too pre order because my brake is only 1h. The thing that I probably like the most is the staff. They always make sure my food is ok and that I get it they way I like it. The only thing I would suggest would be probably putting the candles out more often. It can get a little dark there sometimes. It’s also a shame they don’t have an outside area because the place would be 10 out of 10. I would definitely recommend.”

The Barley Mow, Shoreditch (Bar)
“Are you a lush? Are you demon drinker? Then the Barley Mow is for you. A true pissheads pub. Everyone in there looks like they could be in The Pogues. Is that a blue flashing light? Don’t worry, it’s just an ambulance coming to collect another quitter. As an aside - great music policy.”

The Diner Shoreditch, Shoreditch (Bar / Restaurant)
“I’ve been to Philadelphia in the US. I’ve tasted an authentic Philly Steak with Cheese. I’ve been to The Diner in Shoreditch and eaten what they claim was a Philly Steak with Cheese. It was not even close. Firstly, it came in a baguette. And the cheese was just thrown on top, not melted right through to the core. And the cheese fries - oh dear! The staff here are overworked and the queue out the door is testament to that (as are the state of the toilets). I did enjoy the tunes, however, and I felt at home amongst the bohemian crowd, even if they didn’t realise they were being cheated of authenticity.”
