Brixton Bar & Grill 15 Atlantic Road, Brixton, London, SW9 8HX (Map)

I'm amazed that Patrick found the Brixton Bar and Grill so unpleasant. Having said that, if both him and each of his friends were only planning on spending £11.54 each then they possibly avoided further... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

Hoa Viet Restaurant, Peckham & Camberwell (Bar)
“This is a great little restaurant - the sort that people tend to find 'by accident'. Great food, friendly service; it's well worth checking out if you're even remotely in the vicinity. I'm now a frequent customer, and friends I take there invariably want to return next time they're in town.”

“On leaving a gig (Kasabian) at the local venue (Academy) arrived at this place unsure of what to expect. Have to say had a great night, with lots of friendly people inside, although they all seemed to be from Milton Keynes! Would recommend it to anyone heading south of the river looking for a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Will be definitely visiting next year.”

The Eagle, Shepherds Bush (Bar / Restaurant)
“This is my local and I am very smug about that fact! Venue: Large bar area split by sofas, tables and the like. Has a local pub feel about it, clean and well presented and the furnishings are holding up well (opening summer 2004). Very unusual decor in the ladies - the refurb budget had obviously run out by then and they free styled it! The garden is large and split level, lots of seating and well lit in the evenings, note - no heaters for Autumn evenings though. Drinks: great range of wines by the bottle and glass, reasonably priced champagnes and all are well kept. Draft beers, Belgium lagers and English cider on tap. Over the summer they had 8 types of Pimms mixes on offer so top marks there! Locals: Pretty much white middle classes with a few Australians popping in to play Jenga. A friendly bunch and all are welcomed by the bar staff, who are polite and efficient. Quite a few families in over the summer that seems to have trailed off a bit now. The bar is sufficiently large to never seem crowded however busy it is, but when quiet the layout gives it a sitting room feel which is great. Food: Great! From the standard bangers and mash, through the slow roast lamb shanks to the glorious open steak sandwiches it has become by preferred choice for supper. Food until 9:30 each night. Only down side is I thought there Sunday roasts were a bit weak but that was a few months ago and they may have got that sorted by now. Entertainment: Not their big thing, music tends to be cool house, laid back style and there are no TVs (YIPEE!) Overall: A winner, knocking spots of the other locals in into category (the Seven Stars (over priced and pompous) and the Askew (hair in the food, too loud and rude) pop along and see how good a local can be.”

The Odd Spot Cafe, Hammersmith (Bar)
“I have been to this cafe for brunch a couple of times and alway really enjoyed it. The breakfasts and great - eggs benedicts, cook breakfasts, bagels. The only thing is i dont like their coffee, but then english just cant make it taste nice. But a lovely cosy place to chat and read the paper. As it sits across from where CD:UK is filmed on the weekend, you can also have a chance at seeing a celeb exit the building and all the screaming fans. I saw the Darkness when I was there and friends have also seen Enrique Inglesias. Pretty enterntaining stuff!”

Lowlife, Marylebone (Bar)
“Lowlife rocks! The service you get is with a personal touch. You are made to feel at home. The staff are amazing, especially Kieran! The atmosphere funks. The layout is perfect - you can have privacy or mingle. The music is great. Lowlife is an extension of your living room (or one very cool house party).”

Gowlett Arms, Dulwich (Bar)
“One year on the Gowlett has been expanded, refurbished and now sells brilliant home made pizzas which are very good value. Beer is still changed every week and the ambience is very good. It's much busier than a year ago after a lot of hard work by Jonny & Claire. A gem of a pub and thorougly recommended.”

“Great pub, shame about the management. Very unfriendly and rude, and have no shame in charging a lot of money for very basic food. My favourite is being charged £2.50 for a bit of bread - and that was after paying £8.50 for a couple of slices of salami, beef and a bit of pate (that was also very poor quality). Desparately in need of new manqagement.”

“Don't be fooled by the business-lunch clientele that frequent this pub in the day time. In the evening it's a cozy boozer with a good crowd - probably helped by the great juke box and friendly staf. Highly recommended! ”

The Phene, Chelsea (Bar / Restaurant)
“This pub used to be the perfect local for Old Chelsea residents who were more interested in having a drink than eyeing up each others Porsches. Admittedly it was in need of a coat of paint but whoever chose the decor should be shot. Now just a bland, charmless pub that's trying too hard to be like its near neighbour, gastro-pub The Cross Keys. ”

“Waxy's has the best bar staff in London. You get served quicker than anywhere else the staff aren't looking in the mirror. They are very quick and attentive and the atmosphere is better than anywhere in Soho.”

“Had a fabulous evening in village last Saturday- payed only £3 for admission and once inside was amazed by the very cute gogo dancers! As far as cheesy soho gay bars go- i would rather spend my time and cash in this one. Arrogant bartenders yes- bland- most definately not!”

The Camel, Marylebone (Bar)
“I recently went to The Camel @ Mayfair for a Xmas party, having never been there before, but i will definatly be back there on a regular basis. The staff were so friendly, (good looking) definatley know how to provide proper customer service and man do these guys know how to pump out quality cocktails ( £3 @ happy hour you can't go wrong) It has the perfect party atmosphere in the basement. The Dj rock'd! On my way out, had a glance at the new food menu, which i'll be back to try...made my mouth water just looking at it.”

The Salisbury, Tottenham (Bar)
“Truly remarkable gem with amazing Victorian decor. Lovely food, friendly staff. Don't agree at all with previous reviewer, who thought the place was cold and the food shabby. THE place to go for a sunday roast in North London. Thanks to 'Remarkable Restaurants' for the beautiful restoration. I will be coming back again to absorb that turn of the century ambience...”

Brixton Bar & Grill, Brixton (Bar)
“After visiting Brixton Bar & Grill last night i can safely say that i will NEVER go back again. Myself and my friends were subjected to hostility to the likes i have never experinced before. After planning to invite 25 people down to the venue we were told at 9.30pm that the place was full. You could clearly see that the place was half empty. The bouncer insulted me and my friends, I was called f**king queer, my female friend who happens to be a barrister was told that she was a white piece of trash and her face will be smashed in, my other friend was told to go to hell and shut the f**k up. After speaking to a incompitent manager, who did not have any control of the situation, myself and my friends swiftly left for SW9 were the staff were more than welcoming and deserving of the £300 or more we spent in their venue. I can safely say if you would like a stress free evening out stay away from the Brixton Bar & Grill.”
