“This is the worst pub I have ever visited. Warning. Do not go. You know how it is. You get a text from a friend saying they have just been to see a movie and are having a drink in a pub just around the corner, would you like to join them. You get a call from another friend asking what you're up to that evening so you tell them to meet you in the Barnsbury. Before you know it a small gathering has become a medium sized gathering of an enormous fifteen or so people, all buying drinks, some even buying bar snacks or chunky chips. Most pubs would be overjoyed at this level of custom. But not the Barnsbury. "Are you expecting any more guests?" we were asked as if we'd just fouled the carpet. "We don't allow big groups. If you come here again we won't give you a table." Now there were two empty tables next to our group, there was no queue at the door, people weren't banging on the window demanding service, we weren't drinking heavily, shouting, carousing, raping or pillaging in fact some of our group were so crazy they were ordering cups of tea or bottles of overpriced coke because "they were driving!" Outrageous behaviour I hear you all cry. So what was our crime? "Not ordering food". Apparently, being a "gastropub" they make most of their money from food. Well at £7.50 for two unremarkable drinks I find that a bit hard to swallow. And if complaints about their absurd helpings are anything to go by the food is pretty hard to swallow as well. Now a quiet word in our ear or a polit”

“It was an amazing experience having food at Masala Zone. tomorrow i'll complete one month of my stay in London and i was craving for genuine, real, spicy indian food. Moreover, as Vir Sanghvi had mentioned in his cover story on the Panjabi sisters, in the Brunch Magazine, back home in india, I had to visit the place and try food there. I am planning to visit other outlets by the Panjabi sisters in the future. Well i am here for at least one year and would visit Veeraswamy as well. Coming back to the food - i must say it was of good quality and amazing variety. I was happy with the Grand Thali - I shared it with a friend from university. It was very economical. Wow it had been a good experience. However i would appreciate if Masala added extra spices and also experimented with other vegetables curries and variety of veg combinations. ”

“What a nice surprise to finally find a bar ready for Christmas, so tired of places 'not ready with menus', 'unsure of availabilty', or 'we can take your number and give you a call..' They never do! Not the case at The Angelic. On arrival I simply asked for some details and was promtly given a Christmas pack complete with 3 different menus and booking forms. Good menu too. Nice work guys, you will be seeing me in December.”

“Gorgeous cosy little place tucked away at the back of Hampstead tube station. It's a classy gastro-pub with bar food downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. Food is incredible but you will pay for it, its not cheap. Fabulous selection of wines and loved the boardgames in the bar. Will definitely be going back.”

The Herbert Chapman, Holloway (Bar)
“I was in there the other night, not sure if there has been a change of owenrship or new manager but the whole atmosphere was fantastic, friendly, warm welcome, candles lit and a light display in the fire place, what a difference. We had two bottles of magners and ate of the menu which was two meals for eight pounds and were we suprised, the expectation was of just a small meal but this was obviously fresh and was quite a good portion. Thought the place was great, big difference, will defo revisit and make the study my local.”

“I agree totally with Elaine. Went with some mates on one of their techno nights and there were...10 people in 2am! I know its supposed to be intimate but that's just silly! They did give me a nice free CD though. Hopefully that was a one off....but be warned! ”

“WOW, great night out, waitresses were outstanding and the cocktails were to say the least amazing. Just make sure you leave enough room for the sticky sausages, chorizo and my favourite garlic prawns in white wine!”

The Cross, Kings Cross (Bar)
“The Cross is a lovely, intimate venue. Friday night's "Fiction" is a truly life-affirming affair. It may lack the light shows and stunning sound systems of the larger clubs but it makes up for it in the sheer opulence of decor and atmosphere. It also features a terrific open-air terrace - perfect for Summer evenings and kept warm in Winter by the radiant heat of esctatic clubbers. Whether tribal house or the more lighter, fluffier commercial end of house are your thing (and whether or not you are a member of the top-offs at 2, hyper buff brigade) - you'll have a terrific night me. I wouldn't lie to you. :)”

Fabric, Clerkenwell (Bar)
“Fabric may attract some of the best names and have visually impressive decor but its the atmosphere that counts. The crowd is just a bit too varied to gell - quite. In short it looks terrific has great sound systems and light shows...but it ain't got no soul. That's not so say its bad - just that it could be so much better. My personal recommendation is that you keep on walking and pop into Turnmills.”

The Roxy, Fitzrovia (Bar / Club)
“Good, generally. Drinks can be pricey and clientele can sometimes be discerning if you don't come from a nearby office block. Friendly staff, generally attracts a good crowd and drinks are good value during happy hour. Generally, the atmosphere is really good and the music tends to get everyone up and dancing. Friday night is best music in my opinion. Definitely a regular.”

The Retro Bar, West End (Bar)
“Friendly small gay pub hidden away in a lane off the Strand near Charing Cross train station, frequented by both male and female gays and friends. This is an excellent pub with friendly staff. It is decorated with prints of gay friendly pop stars, and of intreresting other prints. The music played on the juke box is good. Free gay magazines and newspapers are available. I highly recommend this excellent bar. It is well worth a visit.”

The Cockpit, City of London (Bar)
“Interesting small friendly pub in London EC4 hidden away from nearby tourists. This pub is frequented largely by aging gay males, some of whom look like John Inman (Mr. Humphries of 'Are you being served?' fame). Its two owner/landlords both have walrus moustaches as does their little dog. The pub has a team called 'The Cockpit Queens' which represents it in inter-pub quiz nights. The pub itself is in an almost unique tiny old England type triangular building with a very high ceiling, which it claims was a venue for cock fights before this activity was banned in 1824. The pub is popular for its hot food Monday to Fridays at midday. ”

Hops! Bar, West End (Bar)
“I think this is a great bar - covent garden has a vacuum of venues which exist between nice upscale bars and sleazy 'old man pubs', Hops is nice, open plan, with 1980's prices on beer and food!”
