Satay Bar 447-455 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London, SW9 8LP (Map)

Hmmmm... took my lady here and was a bit disappointed. The starters and mains arrived a little too quickly and were pretty plain affairs for the £10-ish price tag. Not bad but not spectacular either. You... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“Amazing, the bar is so well styled and the quality of the food and drinks are fantastic. The staff are friendly and attentive and for any fans of cocktails the drinks list is to be marvelled at. A great new addition to the Hoxton set.”

Agenda, City of London (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“I have seemingly had a very different experience to most of the other reviewers.... on my visit the door staff were congenial and accommodating and the clientele was an equal mix of suits and trendy west-enders. Being a thursday night it probably wasn't as 'swinging' as it sounds on a friday but there was still a good atmosphere. It's just such a shame that most of the bar staff have had a complete customer service. They have obviously spent too much time around the confident city boys and now assume a ridiculous air of self importance. When I questioned the taste of a cocktail that one of my group had ordered I was completely dismissed as I clearly hadn't had the years of experience that it must take to mix 1 part alcohol with 2 parts fruit juice. In all if you can overlook this (or only want to drink beer) then this is a easy choice. ”

The Dome, Kentish Town (Bar / Club)
“The Dome is a good place to hold live gigs. On a saturday night sometimes it can take a while to pick up and is not always that busy, but the music they play is good if your into rock and indie music. I have been to the Dome quite a few times and found it to be ok.”

Chapel Bar & Club, Angel & Islington (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“I came to the Chapel for the first time last thursday for the launch party of Shuffle. I was happily surprised throughout the evening... First, despite being crowded, the bar was not that smokey, the vibe was good and the staff on-the-ball. Second, the drinks were not over-priced, a good point for a venue closing at 1am. And third, at the end of the bar, there is a proper dancefloor with a very good sound system and that was the best surprise. Clash Hi-Fi delighted the crowd which skanked and sweat to the sounds of ska, rocksteady, funk, reggae and soul. It was a great night and everyone stayed til the end and shouted for more. Definitely a great night in a great place. ”

Blushes Cafe, Chelsea (Bar)
“I was absolutely amazed when I was at Blushes and asked for a glass of tap water to take some painkillers (I a broken leg) and was told that they would only sell me still or sparkling mineral water. Additionally my pregnant friend was with me and she received the same response! When I spoke to the Manager she told me in no uncertain terms (quite rudely) that they do this to make a profit from the water that they provide. Quite astounding!”

“This place is fantastic! Ignore Williams, he/she hasn't got a clue. It's a Sunday like no other, and as a Church veteran of over 7 years I do know what I'm talking about. And I'm not fat or obscene, nor have I ever puked at the Church. In fact, I've never seen anyone puke at the Church in those 7 years. Williams, you don't know pure, unadulterated fun is.”

“DO NOT GO HERE! i had my mobile phone and wallet stollen within half an hour of being here - AND the restaurant doesn't have CC TV cameras and refused to track the receipt of the people on the table next to me. ”

The Old Dispensary, Peckham & Camberwell (Bar)
“This eponymous pub / resatuarant is a new addition to the burgeoning gastropub scene in Camberwell and probably the least remarkable. We arrived on Friday night and undeterred by an absence of customers, ordered from the impressive looking menu. My companion ordered the burger which was exceptional, I ordered from the 'specials' blackboard and ordered the Fish Meze followed by Gammon and Poached Egg. The fish Meze arrived first - curly smoked salmon with a spoonful of watery pre-frozen prawns and the first time I have ever seen taramasolata and feta cheese on the same plate. The main course was just as poor. Sinewy gammon with a hard boiled poached egg. Leaving both plates untouched I refused to make excuses to the waitress and the cook marched over to our table. I politely aired my grievances and was angrily informed the 'prawns were defrosted this morning', that the tara was out of a carton but from 'the olive company' and my favourite , they hard boil the poached eggs for 'health and safety reasons'. Go for a drink, go for a burger but only if everwhere else is closed. ”

Beehive (The) (Brixton Rd), Vauxhall & Oval (Bar)
“The Beehive is the best pub in Brixton. No damn pop music, not a "DJ" in sight, high quality beer at rock bottom prices, regular chess and backgammon games, a wide mix of customers from Brixton's richly multicultural population. Particularly recommended: Hopback Summer Lightning, poured straight from the barrel.”

Picture of Charterhouse, Clerkenwell, London

Charterhouse, Clerkenwell (Bar)
“I'm an on-off regular at this bar, and I have to admit it's had its ups and downs in terms of levels of service and food, but since the start of the year it has just got better and better and that's why I wanted to review it. They have great staff in these days: trendy but friendly with it, which helps to create a really relaxed atmosphere. And most of them really know how to make a decent cocktail. Best time to enjoy it is probably lunchtime, or mid-evening on any night of the week - when its not too hectic with younger pre-clubbers (but maybe that's just because I'm getting old!) but also because the food is amazing and the kitchen unfortunately shuts at 9:30pm! Mussels & belgian style chips for under £6 is an absolute bargain for the area, and the rest of the modern british menu is mouth-watering. Their 'Breakfast Tacos' (choice of breakfast fillings in a soft wrap, nothing like nachos at all) plus Bloody Mary, is my new favourite sunday hang-over cure. Weekend clubnights at Charterhouse are always massively popular (and free entry) and you can hire their gorgeous top bar for free (which I did last year, and had a great night NOT having to worry about any minimum spend!) Basically its nice to see a bar turn itself around and get it really really right - especially when its one of my locals! If you haven't been for a while, it's time to re-visit.”

Escape Bar & Art, Brixton (Bar)
“The first time I visited Escape was last year for a mate's birthday. Now I'm a regular - fantastic atmosphere, the best cocktails and the bar staff and the bouncer are really nice. The food menu is not too short, there’s a good cocktail list and a wine list that offers affordable choice.”
