The Porterhouse 21-22 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 7NA (Map)

I was totally bemused that this pub was ranked amongst the worst pubs. It has a really unusual and interesting layout/decor and is almost unparalelled for variety and quality of drinks. If you only like... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“Amusing reviews above - obviously the location of this place means that the clientele are of a certain 'ilk'. However, the place does a cracking line of beers, including many belgian classics, a good selection of wines and some very good, if quite pricey food. Warm evenings lead to huge crowds in the beer garden (spilling into the road and onto the 'Green usually), and a very tasty BBQ! A London Classic.”

Sofra, Mayfair (Bar / Restaurant)
“I am writing this review as a favour to anyone considering this restaurant for a nice evening out: don't go! I have been to many restaurants in and around London and this is easily the worst service I have ever come across. Not only were the waiters (and what seemed to be the manager or assistant manager) rude, abrupt and dismissive, they also pressured us to leave the restaurant by hovering and keeping an eye on us throughout the entire meal. This was not to see if we needed anything, but to get us to get on with it. When the bill came three cover charges AND a 12,5% service charge were automatically included in the bill - laughable considering what they put us through!!! Now for the food: it was fine, overpriced in truth but my grilled mackerel was very fresh and nicely cooked. My friends cod pasta dish wasn't much to write home about and had an overdose of onions in it; my other friend had some very tasty spicy lamb patties. The problem is though, one begrudges spending any amount of money when treated so badly. If it hadn't been for my friends I would have walked out after about 3 minutes - and I'm quite a tolerant person normally, honest! Conclusion: I will never set foot in there - or any other part of the chain - again. ”

“Woefully inadequate--last time I was there when 2am hit so did the (no joke) Justin Timberlake and Beyonce tunes. The Dogstar used to be cool! But I still love the layout of the bar. The Whitehorse knocks the pants off it though.....”

“The venue has had a major revamp. No more battered leather sofas, hurrah!!!! There is a better sound system, better lighting, really friendly staff and there is more seatign and extra places to put your drinks down. The fireplace does it for me on those cold evenings. The bar sells resonalbly cheap drinks and the entrance fee on some nights wont cost you more than a drinks worth. There is a great mix of crowd and a great & friendly atmosphere. Sundays is the place to be and in september there is a night starting there which is going to be a hit with free food and a mix of sunday tunes,Look out for Sunday Best at the islington bar.”

The Jolly Anglers, Wood Green & Palmers Green (Bar)
“Friendly staff, and locals, reasonable bar prices, good music and a good mix of customers. I was slightly put off by the heavy handed tactics of one of the bouncers when removing a customer who had not caused any trouble but had a few too many drinks and fell asleep, and by the influx of clearly VERY underage customers at 11pm on a saturday night. These aside it still ranks higher than some of the other bars in the area, and is open late some nights.”

The Goose & Granite, Wood Green & Palmers Green (Bar)
“Cheap, frequently crowded, but with somewhat unwelcoming and inefficient bar staff, and a slightly odd mix of customers! The last time I was there the customers varied from people meeting before a movie, a very large crowd of very drunk Polish people, and an even larger crowd of ancient locals (average age 60+) mind you they were all pretty friendly. And possibly it was a sunday afternoon thing, but I far prefer The Nelson which has a confusing sign over the door saying Rattle and Hum, which is further up the High road on the other side of the road going away from the shopping centre. ”

“You can always get a seat in this slightly over air conditioned pub. The food is passable, but not good but the place is open until 1 every night which is both handy and somethimess dangerous.”

“I can not believe what i have just read on your review page. I think that both Janet and Marcia are talking about a different White Horse. The White Horse is one of the friendliest most laid back venues in the whole of London. Both the food and drinks are both very good value and top quality. I would recommend this venue to anyone that wants a good night out.”

Dog & Bull, Sutton & Croydon (Bar)
“Quite an outstanding pub for Croydon, and one of the very selct few that I frequent on a regular basis!! One big bonus (besides the as-forementioned quality ales etc.) is the delightful, well-planted beer garden (which manages to ditract the eye from the concrete jungle that Croydon is :) ), and is fantasticfor those reasonable spring/summer days and nights. They also do a wide-ish selection of food, serving a barbeque menu outside (weather-permitting of course) alongside an outside bar - nice! I recommend this pub to anyone who desires a decent pint, a quick lunch-time meal and cosy outdoor settings. Well done Dog and Bull!!”
