Picture of The Highbury Barn, Angel & Islington, London

The Highbury Barn, Angel & Islington (Bar / Restaurant)
“The Highbury Barn used to be a traditional-type pub, which, in the past served it's purpose, particularly on Arsenal home match days. Now though, it's had a makeover; all low-slung sofas, pastel shades and a new menu. I was a bit sceptical but was won over instantly by the friendly service (both on match and non-match days), and the food is great. There's the usual pub-type fare but they also do a neat line in wood-fired oven pizzas, which are delicious, and prices are good - around £5 for a 12" pizza. On Monday nights there's do a two-for-one pizza offer, which is naturally very popular. Clientele-wise, it's a broad mix; not the trendiest spot around, but a good place to while away a chilled-out evening. Possibly, the only quibble I'd have is the mediocre beer selection, but the Guinness was great and it's somewhere where you can definitely just couch out and linger. The Barn has a big screen for football, and over the years has proved to be a hit with Arsenal fans, with Highbury just 10 minutes walk away. With draught beer coming in at £2.40/£2.60, that's decent for London, so I'll be back. ”

“I used to regard the phene of the past as a hidden gem.Part of its appeal to me was the retro ism of the place. It was like stepping into a pub of the sixties,it was classy and at the same time scruffy as f**k.However after initial shock at the drastic makeover I have come to like the place.Yes it can be pretentious and over the top but the two managers are lovely fellows and because of their hospitality I have come back again and again. The resturant upstairs is great and although the downstairs bar has become a plasma screened cocktail/champagne type place it still remains charming,so much so that many of the old regulars have returned. However dont go here looking for george best anymore he has been barred by the management for assaulting one of the staff,he probably didnt like the new paintwork! Enjoy....”

“A beautiful pub on the river with panoramic views from its large veranda. Well kept cellar and a great choice of wines available. Youngs is a popular brew in this area so a dedicated local contingent. I visited the pub on a Rugby match day so it had a great atmosphere with its “big boys” large plasma screen. Some pretentious locals but then again it is Barnes. I didnt check out the food so I can’t comment. One sad observation, the Landlord was a little Mussolini with the staff, maybe it wasnt a good day for him, he never smiled once. He had an expression like a bull dog who had swallowed a wasp. He reminded me of Les Dawson without the laughs.”

“Your review is way wrong... we had a meal there last night and it was fantastic... the atmosphere is great... the way the pub has retained its nooks and crannies and incorporated the Lodge into the old building has been tastfully done... the drinks are a load cheaper than my local... the food tasted wonderful and the service was great...”

“This is one of the best pubs in the area. It attracts passers-by along the river, popping in for a swifty and a strong friendly local following. Well located on the river. What cement works? Its actually the Budweiser brewery behind it. Ive enjoyed a visit in the winter and the summer, both times being different in atmosphere. I was told it has one of the best Quiz nights in London every Tuesday. The staff are friendly with an eccentric, celebrity type, Irish Landlord called John who is full of interesting facts, a sort of Irish Ray Stubbs. Overall You dont get many pubs with a great view of this calibre.”

“Difficult to give a bad review on this pub. Exceptional food and wonderful service in a proper London Victorian boozer. I have visited 6 times now and the menu seems to vary all the time. I have been known to drool rather excessivly over the food. What a bonus ,lunchtimes it is never over busy and I can read the papers .This is great value and I am thinking of reserving a permenant table.”
