The Alice House 283-285 West End Lane, West Hampstead, London, NW6 1RD (Map)

Love, Love, Love! I stumbled on this place on a venture round West Hampstead one eve. It's a couple of tube stops away from my house, but I'll definitely be adding this to my list of 'regulars'. Really... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“Yes, the food is very very good. Yes, the wine list is a veritable who's who of Old and New World. And yes, the service is impeccably and delivered in a chattier, more approachable style. The real reason for visiting this restaurant, though, has to be the view of Trafalgar Square and the rest London. One of the best restaurant views in London!”

“Pricey wine shop but quality wines available. Staff is not always very polite or attentive to you as you enter into the shop. You can see a lot of great wines in there, sometimes available on the tap - £10-25 for a glup of old vintage Bordeaux, not necessarily a bad deal. Get in here for the choice of good wines available, not for the price which could be more aggressive. Overall OK, even if I tend not to buy my wine from there.”

“Absolutely horrendous. Went for drink and some food and was shocked by how bad this place was. Initially ok with very chatty and nice barmaid but then ordered food, waited for over an hour and then asked another waitress if everything was ok. She was incredibly rude, said she would bring it whenever it was ready and that was it. Food then totally burnt, sent back and told same waitess. She turned out to be manager (!!!!), made no apology and continued with her horrific attitude. I am still in shock at how this person can make a living out of this. Do not go to this bar.”

“We have visited before and decided to take some family friends for a night out, but unfortunately tonight was a disaster. The dining room was very loud, the lights flicked on and off and worst of all was the service. We waited 40 minutes to order food & wine, the wine wasn't provided until after we were half way through the first course, 30 minutes later... disinterest prevailed. Food was good but not spectacular. Disappointing experience and we will be unlikely to return.”

“Wonderful Indian food. YUM YUM. However was let down by the surly waiter and dingy surroundings. Having not eaten Indian food for some time, I should have gone for the mild option. So beware, don't be too ambitious. With so many Indian restaurants in Tooting, I would try others before going back. Please sack the waiter.”

“I attended the launch of the reopening of this bar/restaurant last week. It was very busy and lively with a good atmosphere. The waitress service was excellent considering the amount of people attending. The tasters were good especially the oysters and chunky chips. There was also a good selection of beers and wines to choose from. I would like to go back to see if the pub grub matches up to the launch.”

“I used to go to the Quebec most weekends and enjoy the company. New bar staff that speak english are needed very badly. Its such a shame this once great gay pub has gone down the pan.”

“OMG, what a disappointment!!! My friend and I went after reading recommendations, but we were in for a shock. Decor was not tasteful, service was crap and waiting time was horrendous. The worst part of the whole experience was not having spun around 3 times on the table that gave no value to the restaurant.... was the fact 2 of my friends found hair in their food. The waiter deducted the meal from our bill but was still very rude and we barely touched the rest of our meals. Very disappointing and would not recommend!”

“I had my 30th birthday at this bar on the weekend and it was the best night of my life. We were drinking our way through Germany's best beers, the food was tasty and in huge portions and the band were unbelievable we were standing on our chairs all night. we will definitely be back”

“Went with a friend wanting an evening of wine and good food and Vida Loca didn't disappoint - it was my first time going, and I was a bit worried that there wouldn't be enough choice of Tapas, or that it would feel too 'bar-like' to enjoy a proper meal, but it was perfect - would definitely go back again either just for drinks & a snack or for dinner.”

“Me and my friend have just been for a weekend to London and were staying near Marble Arch. We ended up in the Quebec by accident and had an absolutely fab time we will go back again when we are in London. Very welcoming to everyone even us straight folk.”

“Really delicious food and plenty of it! Lasted me and my flat mates two more days in leftovers. I didn't find the staff too bad on my trip, a bit slow maybe but very smiley. I'd recommend the place, the quality of the food is a cut above most Chinese's I've been to and I think it was worth the higher prices (although i wasn't the one paying haha).”

Park Tavern, Kingston (Bar)
“Apart from the exterior we thought everything else about this pub was very poor. no food, expensive beer over £3.50 for an average pint, and the seating was rock hard wooden benches except for a few more comfortable chairs as you enter the pub on the left hand side which were all taken. We visited on Friday evening and a number of the mainly male dominated customers were shouting rather than talking. It struck us that the pub may be on its last legs as the decoration, toilets and comfort all left a lot to be desired.”

“Ping Pong never disappoints. This was my 3rd visit in as many months and so decided it was worth mentioning. Even as a fussy vegetarian, it seems that there is always something new and exciting to try, and the portions seem to be just the right amount. Although the cocktails are slightly expensive compared to the food, they are, nonetheless, quite delicious. Finally, the bill for two of us, worked out to a little over £40 - bargain!”

“I have dined several times at this delightful family run establishment and attended parties hosted by friends of mine. On each occasion the ambiance, food and service have been excellent. The delightful garden is is without equal for al fresco dining. The 3 course set menu at £21.95 includes a good selection of popular French classic dishes such as Provencal fish soup, beef bourguignonne and my personal favourite dessert Tart Tatin. Each dish is individually priced but go for the 3 courses as you in effect get the dessert for free. Great atmosphere in winter or summer but worth checking if they are holding a private function before going”

Picture of The Canonbury, Angel & Islington, London

The Canonbury, Angel & Islington (Bar)
“The Canonbury is a total disappointment. Despite its huge potential and "presentable" appearance, you quickly realise that currently it has few selling points. The staff behind the bar lacked any sort of personal skills and were unresponsive and rude. They looked like they were not properly trained and took an age to do anything. The drinks prices are ridiculously expensive, with 2 beers coming to almost 8 quid, and the menu is typically poor value given the standard of food that is delivered. The seating in the garden is incredibly uncomfortable, with it presumably installed by a designer for its appearance, rather than for the actual experience and comfort it should provide the paying customers. My visit was awful.”

“Had lunch hear yesterday and surprised by the lovely beer garden out the back - really caught the sun. Had the burger and chips which was quality. Can't really give a "Value for Money" rating as bill picked up by someone else and the "Atmosphere" was ok considering ok was lunch... will have to try it in the evening.”
