Dirty Martini Covent Garden 11-12 Russell Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2B 5HZ (Map)

I went here for my birthday last week. I booked a booth in advance and that definitely made a difference as the bar was packed. Having said that, there was a great crowd in there and the table service... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“For 3 of 6 nights in Dec 2001 after 9/11 we stayed in Mayfair... best restaurant one can imagine... good value... can't wait to leave Memphis, TN for our next visit in May, 2007... when you save a bistro card for 5 years, it has to be good!”

Paradiso e Inferno, West End (Bar / Restaurant)
“I had dinner there with a friend on Saturday. Absolutely the most appalling "Italian" restaurant i've ever eaten in. The Bresaola was no better than Sainsbury's or Tesco, infact they are probably better. Our spaghetti pomodoros were absolutely tasteless and lightly covered in a tomato sauce that was probably out of a tin. And the service was so bad we waited around 15 minutes after sitting down just to order (the restaurant was empty) at which point we were greeted rudely and with no interest whatsoever from the waiter. Awful experience, never to be repeated.”

“Not our first time at GBK, but our first time at St Paul's branch. It is much bigger than the ones we have been to, but the service and food were still fantastic. It is still one of the best relatively cheap meals to be had in London. We found St Paul's more comfortable due to the space, but the food is the same everywhere. The burgers are always brilliant, but it's the THICK cut chips and the garlic dip sauce that completes the meal... If you've never had a GBK burger, you've never had a real burger....”

Brixton Bar & Grill, Brixton (Bar)
“Great atmosphere, very friendly waiting staff, but very slow service, and appalling food, the "luxurious" fish pie was a vile slop of boney fish and unidentifiable vegetables, and the accompanying rocket and parmesan salad contained, bizarely, neither rocket or parmesan! When I pointed this out, I was grudgingly given the salad that was supposed to accompany the meal, but the chefs tried to make the waitress add the cost to our bill! Really disappointing.”

“Don't go: this isn't a pub at all - its a snobby wannabe restaurant. On Saturday night we ate a rather nice Vietnames next door & thought we had timed it perfectly to get last orders in at the Barnsbury: we got to the (empty) bar at 10.50 to be told that we weren't going to be served as we had not bought food there! The pub was about two third full with no one waiting to be served and about 3 bar staff stood doing nothing so why they did not want to serve two more people with ten minutes before time is beyond me. They are obviously either too lazy to worry about their customers (ie wanted to knock off early) or think they are running Le Gavroche. If they can't be bothered with customers, then they don't deserve them & we certainly won't be going there again.”

“We had the basic fondue here for three and it was amazing! I have seen some reviews where people have said the staff were rude - we found them to be very pleasant. I think they are very busy so it would be worth booking. Next time I am going to have the alpermagronen (sure I've spelt that wrong!) It is a bit pricey but then you have to remember it is in central London and the portions are surprisingly generous. Also, the quality of their ingredients is good and I think mostly from Switzerland. Can't wait to go back!”

William IV, Ladbroke Grove & Kensal (Bar / Restaurant)
“I've lived in the Kensal Green area since the late 80s, well before this local re-opened as the pub/restaurant it is now, and it was a very welcome addition and change to what was on offer in the area. Aside from the weekday menu which is mainly tapas, they also serve a great traditional Sunday lunch which is brilliant as it saves me having to cook when my parents visit! Other local places have fancier menus, more extensive drinks selections and are in more obvious settings for the type of place this venue is, but for quality of food and drink, friendliness and efficiency of service, atmosphere, aesthetics, value for money and general fun factor, William IV is hard to beat.”

“I have only visited the English Maid on midweek lunchtimes but it has never failed to please, whatever the weather. I'd recommend the open deck, eating perhaps the sea bass with your chosen white wine. Situated within walking distance of Lambeth Bridge, this venue deserves much more attention tha it has been getting. The buzz of more customers would notch up the atmosphere. Having said that, the space afforded couples means that there is a welcome intimacy - whilst enjoying the pleasant river views and gentle sway of the boat (when the tide is up). This is one venue I will be definitely visiting again and again this summer (2007), although this venue also suits spring and autumn.”

Paradiso e Inferno, West End (Bar / Restaurant)
“I went once to this restaurant, never to return. The 3 of us ordered a few drinks then some food. One of my friends ordered some tomato soup that was as good as any Heinz tinned soup. I'm pretty sure it actually came from a tin. So as the mushrooms from my risotto, which ended up by being some rice with tomato sauce and "parisian" mushrooms. Both of us sent back our nearly untouched dishes, stated that this was no good. The service was no better. I was actually so scared that the dishes would fall on my head from the shaky hands of the waiter, that I offered to take my plate before it reached the table (or my knees). Except that I was told off with a prompt "Don't Touch!". The real fun started with the bill, charging us for the entire food. When I told them I was refusing to pay for something I sent back to the kitchen nearly untouched, they claimed I was simply not hungry and still should pay. Voices started to raise, purchase orders were thrown at me to prove the mushroom were parisian and not in a tin (they can be and were both), threat to call the police were made on both sides... We left, and were told never to come back. We were just happy to oblige!”
