Had an awesome birthday celebration. Took a gang of mates and we all loved it. The music was really different and we got no attitude from anyone. The bouncers were really charming and the door girl greeted... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

Cittie of York, City of London (Bar)
“The previous review (surprisingly done by a member of the fairer sex) unfortunately missed the point of the Citie of York. Although there aren't many pubs surrounding it with a place such as this you don't really need one. Citie of York is one of those ye olde pubs that London needs more of. If you manage to get one of the booths which look more like confessionals then you're laughing. The one beer that you MUST try is called Ayingerbrau, trust me when I say that 3 or more of these frosty fellas will leave you with a big grin on your face. Although not as refined and trendy as other pubs the Citie of York is a great place to pop in for a swift half or a night on the ales and should be pencilled in as a 'must-visit' if ever in the area.”

“Wonderful little place to enjoy a pint of your favourite Fuller's. Stay warm and cosy round the fire in winter and bask in the beer garden during summer. Fabulous staff make it a place you'll return to.”

The Raynes Park Tavern, Wimbledon (Bar)
“Not a bad place for a quiet drink as long as you dont mind being surrounded by old soaks who prop the bar, otherwise nice place with a grumpy landlord”

B'lo, Chelsea (Bar)
“I had my birthday party at B'lo last week. The venue was the perfect size to accomadate my party of 100 people. Great value for money as there was no hire fee, just a £150 deposit which was refunded to me on the night of my party. The doorman was polite and the bar staff competent and charming. The atmosphere was second to none but then again it was my party. (ha-ha)”

The Maple Leaf, West End (Bar)
“The Maple Leaf is a great pub! The customer service from the Canadian staff is fantastic. As customer service is something that is more focused on in Canada than the UK it really shows. Considering the low wages with no tips for pub workers in London these guys are doing a superb job. I disagree with the other reviewers. The food here is big, tasty and inexpensive. They serve a gigantic plate of a Canadian fav, poutine(chips with cheese and gravy),wings, huge Caesar salads and Canadian beer on tap and in bottles. You won't find larger portions anywhere else. And where else can you go to watch ice hockey games and other Canadian programmes for which they also keep on tape.”

Green Man - Youngs, Putney (Bar / Restaurant)
“The Green Man has been rebuilt over the three months to December. It has improved almost out of recognition - it used to be a small, very friendly but basically tired pub stuck in the 70s. Now it is a decent size, muich more comfortable and has a good menu but hasn't lost its friendliness. Even better is that you can now get to the toilets without going outside! Really good for weekend brunch/lunch or a few post work beers & food if you can't be bothered to ring for a curry or microwave the M&S ready meal after a long day. Traditional rather than trendy and a client base more thirty plus than pubescent. Certainly worth a visit! ”

The Angel, Soho (Bar)
“You have probably been past the Angel a thousand times and thought, I bet that place is a complete dive, but low and behold, it is a surprisingly appealing intimate traditional boozer which pulls what would seem like a regular crowd of punters. Lots of original Victorian features too and none of those tatty pub posters/leaflets littering the walls. The only drawback is it's a 'Samuel Smiths' pub, so a limited selection of beers on tap, and no Guiness!”

Aura Kitchen & Bar, St James (Bar / Restaurant)
“Oh dear, oh dear. This used to be a genuinely classy place with seriously good drinks and near-perfect music. Whilst some of that may remain, the absurd door policy and membership fees have ensured that the unpretentious refreshingly w**ker free crowd is history. Just another London celeb haunt going the way of the Met Bar et al.”

“I was lookng for a traditional English pub to take my parents (First-times in London) for a drink and meal. This place is great as it was built in 1835 and doesnt look at is its changed! It also doesnt play any music so you can chat without shouting and the food is great. It is a little pricey but well worth it as the portions are a good sizes and very well cooked. A very nice place to catch up with friends over a bottle of wine.”

“the atmosphere is great, classy without being intimidating, there is an excellent menu of contemporary british classics - always cooked to perfection, and servered by friendly and helpful waiters. There is an excellent wine list a lot served by the glass. Pints are also served here. It really is a great night out.”

“We''ve been here for eight years, doing good food drink and art. We were, honest, just about the first ''modern'' bar in south London. People said we''d brought the west end south of the river. Award: 1996 nominated for Time Out London ''Bar of The Year''. 1998 Evening Standard ''Pub of the Year'' runner-up. 1999 First entry to Good Food guide. 2002 ''Best for Kids'' south of the river Living South Magazine. 2003 ''Best for Kids'' south of the river Living South Magazine. We''ve had over 300 artists in exhibitions”

“It is an amazing place. The first reviewer is correct in saying that the only way to get in is by being a member or someone of "note". However membership is £250 per annum with an £250 joining fee, so pretty reasonable, when you think that ChinaWhite is £750! However, applications for membership are reviewed by the owners, so quite tough! One other point, the club is backed by the ChinaWhite owners, so expect it to be as good, if not better.”

Picture of The Angelic, Angel & Islington, London

The Angelic, Angel & Islington (Bar)
“I stumbled across this place whilst recovering from a particularly nasty case of the shingles, and contrary to the advice of my medical practioner I proceeded to purchase several beverages of beery goodness from the stout yeoman of the bar. When I say stout, I really mean small and ginger but he was a cheery fellow and does a great line in condom and nasal cavity based party tricks. My apologies I digress, anyway the fluids consumed were tasty yet still left enough change in my pocket to pay for my over-priced medication from my local pharmacist. The musical entertainment was quite literally music to my ears, but somehow also lifted my spirits from the boggy mire of self pity that only scabies can inflict. Following this remarkably successful visit to the Angelic I have decided to recommend it to all my parishioners, brethren and other heavily soiled individuals as if it does them half the good it did to me then the people of Islington will have a lot more joy in their hearts and lot less warts on their tadgers.”

Picture of The Pilot, Chiswick & Brentford, London

The Pilot, Chiswick & Brentford (Bar / Restaurant)
“owned by the same happy peeps as the stonemasons, pilot is a similar formula successfully repeated in this quiet location. definately more of a local''s place filled with late twenty and thirty-somethings ''fashionista'' types. it''s more focused towards being a restaurant than a pub, but when it gets busier the bar area is filled with people out for a drink. but the food is the main reason for going. it''s superb. starters are verging on main portion size and are outstanding. mains are fantastic and the menu changes frequently. quality and service is better than the stonemasons... superb range of beer (leffe, hoegaarden and staropramen on tap), good wine and other drinks on par for the type of establishement. prices are slightly under the stonemasons, so it''s well worth the walk / taxi down there. the only downside is that it is a little bright. if you like gastropubs, do try it!”
