All Star Lanes, City of London (Bar / Restaurant)
“An upmarket addition to the Bloomsbury bowling scene, All Star Lanes is a cut above the competition. The four full-size lanes have an American-style diner down one side, serving juicy burgers and salads. The bar is a surprise, swathed in red with plenty of space and often the home to a live DJ: cocktails are US-themed, the handiwork of the Worldwide Cocktail Club, and are all properly made, and there's a fine selection of beers. For the munificent or, let's face it, company-sponsored, there's a private room with it's own bar and two more lanes. The only downer is that it's so popular it's hard to get a bowl in here. Book early!”

“Sure you might see a celeb, but they'll look mighty odd through the bottom of your martini glass. Quick, get another cocktail! This place is a great blend of glam and informal, attracting locals and long-distance travellers, cocktail afficionados and newbies alike. Stick to the menu, or on a quiet night get the award-winning, charming mixologists to test something out on you. Oh and food is tasty as hell and although it looks small is actually the right amount. Surely there isn't anywhere better in London?”

Loungelover, Shoreditch (Bar)
“I dropped into Loungelover at 11pm on a Friday night, dropped my sack of bagels off at the accomodating reception and headed for the Bar, as one does. The floor staff looked at me as if my head was on backwards. The oh-so-macho barmen took my arrival in better stride and mixed me up a couple of cocktails. They didn't know how to mix a treacle so I talked one of them through it and he made a fine fist of it, my daiquiri follow-up was a touch sour for my palette. Now I don't know about you but I'm normally happy enough pottering into a bar solo and having a chat with the bar if it isn't too busy. The guys behind the counter were affable enough, but I had no-where to sit and had to pay service (!) on my two cocktails, taking them over the tenner each. Ouch. Scanning the place, everyone was seated, very well-behaved, and intent on looking hip, without adding much to a self-concious, rather studiously cool atmosphere. Having said all that, it would make an impressive venue for a blind-date, because it looks great and there's plenty to look at. With the right people in tow, I'd be prepared to have another go at this place.”
