“Wow they get some big crowds in here. Thank goodness they've opened up the roof terrace for summer. Loads more space. Still, the atmosphere downstairs is hard to beat. Loads of different nationalities boogeying and getting drunk. Lots of fun. Quite a young crowd too.”

“I met a couple of my girlfriends here for our monthly catch up and we ended up staying for ages. The choice of burgers is enormous. It took us about 15 minutes to decide. The onion rings were average, as were the fries, so I'd recommend skipping both, but the burgers are all good. Especially when combined with a Mac's Gold New Zealand beer. Desserts are non-existent too but that's only because the burgers are so enormous. Quirky location, interesting decor.”

“Expensive, yes, but what the hell. This is a one-off. You wouldn’t eat here every day, but you would come here just to see what it’s all about. We didn’t mind the hefty price tag so much because we felt healthy and virtuous for eating raw, or nearly raw, vegan food. The presentation was excellent, the service was chummy, the cocktails were mighty and the general ambience encouraged a wholesome and subdued shared experience.”

“A nifty space hidden away in a basement off a side street off a back street off the main drag of Piccadilly. Even though it is a Wagamama, it’s still one of those need to know places, just because it’s not too easy to find. The portions were enormous, which gave my friend and I all the fuel we needed to get over our Carnaby Street shopping trawl. Great, colourful selection on the menu too.”

“The emphasis here is primarily on the beer garden - Farringdon's only beer garden apparently - and it really does catch a lot of the sun. It also catches a lot of the noise from passing tube trains but I still like it's secluded-yet-in-the-City feel. Great for working outside in the sun if you have a laptop (free Wifi).”

“This would make a great present for someone special. I took a loved one on this river cruise and we felt like we were millionaires the whole afternoon. Amazing food, in plentiful amounts, fantastic views of nearly all of London's sites, as much champagne and wine as you'd ever need on a Friday afternoon, and a complete overall sense of well-being by the end.”

“This place used to be some dingy O'Neills type place full of sports fans and shouting. Then they got rid of the TVs and started playing some decent tunes instead. Now it's got a much more relaxed atmosphere. If you want to go and have a decent afternoon pub meal with relatively inexpensive wine on a weekend without the intrusion of football or rugby, you can look no further than The Goat. It's almost unique in that respect. And boys, a tip for you, because of the lack of sport and the comfortable surroundings, this one is particularly popular with the ladies. I'll leave the rest to you.”

“My boyfriend and I checked this place out before getting on the Eurostar to Paris. We'd been to the champagne bar upstairs before so were looking for something a little different that wasn't too far away from our train. The food was of excellent quality (the charcuterie plate was enough to keep me going) and the atmosphere was created solely by the glass people-watching frontage and cavernous interior. But we did feel it was a tad expensive and next time we take the train might opt for the Betjeman Arms upstairs, which is apparently rather good.”

“I absolutely love this place. The food isn't bad and there's a fairly decent, if a little bit pricey, range of drinks, and the downstairs part is full of good looking chaps and lasses. But the main reason we came here was the upstairs section where they have all kinds of performances. We went last night to a Music Hall Variety style show that had all kids of musicians, magicians, dancers and perfromers. We had such a great time for only a fiver!! I'm definitely going back. They have some famous indie bands doing DJ sets there too. Top!”

“I've read rave reviews about the breakfasts so I thought I'd give them a try. I had the eggs benedict. It was worth every penny of the £8.50 asking price. No, it's not cheap, but it is worth it. Great for people who need WIFI too. It's bright, airy, has individual booths and relaxing music playing in the morning. I'll definitely be back.”

“The review above is dead right. It's more a restaurant than a pub. The food here is amazing and easily puts anything in the West End to shame. It might seems expensive when you look at the menu (which is HUGE) but then you are buying into high class. Beautifully decorated too. Only a 30 seconds from Holland park station so no excuse for not giving it a go.”

“A true hidden gem of a pub. It's like a old maze in there. Especially on a Friday night after work. Loads of nooks and crannies and open fire greatness. Plus, even though it's mega busy, you get served very quickly (staff are great). Would like to go back on a Sunday to see the difference. Better than The White Hart round the corner, just. God selection of ales too.”

“This is a true sports lover pub. Screens all over the shop but in a classic gastropub setting. It's a little bit off the beaten track but if you combined it with a trip to the Ship and The Waterfront Young's pub over the bridge and you have yourself a great summertime mini pub crawl. Great sarnies and good selection of beers. Looking forward to the World Cup there.”

“These burger are not cheap but my goodness they are hearty! And they have a MASSIVE range so it should keep everyone happy. You have to try the Kiwi burger with beetroot and egg in it, a true New Zealand treat, especially when combined with a Mac's Gold NZ beer. These guys always have special offers on too so keep an eye open for those. Goes well with a trip to The Clapham Picturehouse up the road. The atmosphere is a bit sterile though. Makes for quick eating.”

“This bar is good for one thing and one thing only - watching sport. They have screens everywhere (I recommend getting there early and nabbing a sofa downstairs). The food is very mediocre and they don't have any ales on tap but it's clean, modern and bright enough to keep locals happy.”

“If you're expecting this place to be nothing more than a carbon copy of its bigger sisters, Lost Angel & Lost Society, then you'll be sorely mistaken. It has a little bits of that notorious quirkiness but it's not as big as it's not as 'lost' It's right on the high street so has a purely high street vibe. Weekends are busy but not overcrowded and they love to play the music LOUD! And filled with lots of great eye candy (both boys and girls).”

“This is quite a new restaurant but it’s doing very well considering its youth. It’s nice to see a British restaurant in Belgravia as an alternative to all the Italian restaurants in the area. The decor is both modern and classic and does as well as it can with the space provided. I noticed a subtle fragrance of perhaps cinnamon when I first walked in and it instantly gave me a good feeling, before I’d even sat down. The service was exemplary and the food was delightfully inventive for a lunchtime. £22 for a 2-course meal (I recommend the confit of black leg chicken) and a large glass of Mendoza Sauvignon Blanc: what a steal! Keep an eye out for the interesting designs on the ceilings of the toilets (it’s the little touches).”

“I used to think The Selkirk was the best pub in Tooting but then I stumbled across this place. What a find. They have all kinds of crazy nights going here from live music to burlesque to swing dancing to village fetes (I kid you not!). It's amazing. A huge great big singular room filled with all kinds of weird artefacts. The wine list is pretty decent and the proximity to the tube means it wont be difficult to stumble home. Great tunes too.”

“This is the BEST bar in South East London. Fact. It's right near Crofton Park train station, it has the Rivoli right over the road, AND it has it's very own off license next door. How cool? Wooden tables, floors, ceilings, bar - wooden everything; except the people and the vibe, which is....bouncing. Great beer selection. Perfect for those in their 30s.”

“The review by Christian Rose-Day above is dead right. The food is terrible. But aside from that, this is a really fun club-bar-snooker club-disco dance hall. Getting live music, pool, and a poptastic disco floor all into one night is the perfect recipe for a lady like myself. Definitely one for a girls' night out. Loads of youngness and Antipodean eye-candy. Man-hunks abound (wink).”

“Even though this nifty little boozer is just a couple of minutes walk from Victoria it's backstreet vibe means it has an 'in the know' popularity. I've been there during the day for a meeting (great wifi) and it was lovely and quiet. We felt really relaxed and the homely decor made it feel like some country mansion kitchen. And then came the lunchtime rush. Obviously a favourite with many a local worker. At least it gave the place a different kind of atmosphere. A great pub for all times of the day”

“An amazing restaurant. it's simply out of this world. And hardly anyone knows about it! Which is why it's so quiet. But quiet in a way a massive greenhouse would be. It basically has no ceiling and sounds echo in from all around. The water fountain is a great feature and there's usually the tinkling of a piano in the background. Perfect for business meetings or a lovers getaway. And the food is outstanding. One of London's best restaurants.”

“Shhhh, keep it a secret. This is possibly one of the best pubs in London. It cant be too much of a secret because it's always busy in there. “Two pieces of advice here: (1) only ever go if you have some kind of coupon, voucher or special offer to take advantage of; (2) get there very early. The Riverside, Vauxhall & Oval (Bar)
“It's all about the location and the decor in this place. It's a bugger to find but as it's right next to the river, it's a great place to bask in the Thames-side sun in the summer (or shack up inside with a roast in the winter). It's bright, and airy and absolutely massive, with loads of different seating options to keep all and sundry happy. I came hear with a couple of Irish lasses and we ordered a bottle of Malbec and had one of the funniest nights of our lives. A really chatty kind of place.”

“What a find this place is. I never really knew about it until I went to see The Filthy Dukes play live there. It's set up in such a way so that everyone gets to see the stage with lots of different levels for people to stand, or rave on. The bar is a bit of a scrum and the cloakroom is a joke (leave the coat at home) but there's plenty of room in a gig and the sound system is fairly decent.”

“During the summer I can see this being a hot bed of activity what with such an expansive outdoors area right next to the canal. “Brilliant! Simply brilliant. This chain has been winning award ever since it arrived in London and it's easy to tell why. It's the whole experience of the restaurant that real draws you in. Even down to the little touches like creating it's own mini-magazine and handing out chilli seeds for customers to take home. “It looks like Galileo's has had a pretty nifty refurbishment in recent times, which creates more window seating. Great for people watching. This place is very Italian. I think all the (excellent) staff are Italian, giving it more authenticity. The price range is what you would expect from a restaurant so close to Piccadilly, but the standard is a lot higher than most. The funghi and blue cheese starter is brilliantly potent, whilst the lamb chops with grilled veggies is filling enough to warrant skipping dessert and heading straight for coffees. I'd go back.”

The real reason for visiting this restaurant, though, has to be the view of Trafalgar Square and the rest London. One of the best restaurant views in London!”

The Lost Angel, Battersea (Bar / Restaurant)
“I doubt Battersea has a better bar. Or a better restaurant for that matter. It's so stylistically modern, you cant help but spend the first 10 minutes just gawping at your surroundings. I'd recommend the restaurant section as your first port of call before moving outside for a mojito or two, and finally sliding onto the dancefloor where some rather excellent tunage is provided. Easily, my new favourite bar.”

JB's Bar & Restaurant (closed), Victoria (Restaurant / Hotel)
“The decor is pretty shoddy, although the obsession with art is satisfying. It feels a bit like an airport lounge....from 1985. The chefs are possibly the only good thing about this place; especially when it comes to seafood. Their fish dishes are amazing, and beautifully presented too. Move the restaurant out of this Victoria hotel and it might be pretty decent.”

“Brick Lane has it all, really. I just wish I didn't live so far away. The unusual shape of this venue lends itself to amazing performance, especially those that involve someone dangling and dancing in mid-air. I also like that you can start and end your whole evening here - cocktail, dinner, show, boogie, then home Jeeves.”

“If you're not a fan of kids then stay well clear of this Giraffe. It's overrun with mums and prams and children and happy faces and pregnant bumps and so on and so forth. Personally, I love that sort of youth exuberance and can quite happily sit amongst the swarming maelstrom. Others might not think so, though. Coffees to go are great. As are the breakfasts, surprisingly.”

“This place could quite easily be my new office. As it's so big and so beautifully furnished you feel right at home wherever you're sitting, indoor or outdoor, and the WiFi is perfect for work purposes. We had a business lunch here - the haddock and poached egg is divine - and then I stayed on afterwards by myself just tapping away on my laptop. Brilliant.”

“I went to The Grand before departing with a group of girls for a weekend away via the Eurostar and I was totally absorbed by the grandeur of the whole place. It's very in keeping with the new station and it put us ladies in the right frame of mind for our weekend away. Plus, it's much better than the overrated champagne bar outside.”

“My mother took me here for dinner before we went to a classical performance at The Barbican and although the view is as fantastic as the food, the prices and speed of service were questionable. And even though I'm in my late 30s I was the youngest person there by about 20 years. One to take your Mum and Dad to.”

The Phoenix, Chelsea (Bar / Restaurant)
“What a quaint little secret hidden away down a side alley this is. It's one of those places you really have to be told about to realise it's even there. Every day at The Phoenix feels like a Sunday afternoon. Parents read newspapers and ignore children. Couples whisper sweet nothings to one and other over roast dinner. And I go there just to feel like one of the Sloane Rangers. Not really, but I do love this pub.”

“For a chain restaurant this is actually surprisingly good. And it's only a minute from Notting Hill tube station and Hyde Park, so Central Line access is great. Top tip: choose any dish that contains tomato, fish, or gorgonzola. All are fab. Trust me. Oh, and the service is very jovial too, which is always a winner.”

Fentiman Arms, Vauxhall & Oval (Bar / Restaurant)
“This is the best, if not the only, pub in the Oval-Kennington area. Loads of hidden nooks and crannies, plus a bar garden that is one of London's best kept secrets. Sturdy wine list, top nosh, great for chatting and board games. Also good for Northern Line users.”

“This place is rather unassuming from the outside but inside it looks like a team of camp designers have fired off round after round from their camp gun; it's completely over the top, but in a good way. The close proximity to Bond Street/Oxford Street means it's quite a safe place and you'll always get a taxi. The cocktails are especially inventive, too. I'm going back.”

“What an amazing restaurant. Even without the food the vista of London in full swing is spectacular. Definite contender for 'best view of Borough Market from a restaurant window'. And the food will actually distract you from said view. Brilliant, if a trifle steep. Special treat territory.”

“Don't try the pub quiz here, it's WAY too hard. There must be some clever people living in Tufnell Park because my friends and I got royally whooped. Oh well, it was fun and we learnt some stuff, I guess. Things I DID like about the this gastropub: the variety of areas to sit, the artistic garden, the hearty food, and the jolly good wine list.”

“Dining in a London has never been so dramatic. This isn't a meal, it's a show! This is one of the best restaurants in The City, if not the whole of London. The dinners, although not mind-blowing, skirt the edges of 5-star. But we were too distracted by the intense performances to really notice anyway. I had goosebumps for the whole evening.”

Fluid, Clerkenwell (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“Fluid is an unusual bar. Fairly pricey after the 2-for-1s finish. Sushi is like an afterthought; it’s pretty good, but I wouldn’t vouch for the hygiene standards. Funny smell downstairs. Otherwise, it’s OK. Some days they open up all the doors and windows and it becomes a very different bar. Nice.”

The Castle, Angel & Islington (Bar / Restaurant)
“Most people turn right when they come out of Angel underground station if they're going out, understandably, but this pub is a nice little treat in the other direction. A good selection of wines and beers, food that is comfortably hearty, and a roof terrace that is perfect for bus spotting. Best pub south of Angel tube but north of Clerkenwell. Probably.”

“Wow, what a transformation! This was once a venue for footie scoundrels, now it has thankfully become THE cool hangout in this part of town, filled to bits with young, gorgeous professionals, like myself. Easily the best bar-restaurant-pub thingie this side of Clapham South. And what a beer garden! Who knew it was even there?”

“There's no chance of stumbling across this great gastropub by accident, it's literally in the middle of nowhere. Along with the Sun & Doves, this is one of the best pubs in Camberwell. Brilliant beer garden, fabulous bohemian decor, ENORMOUS feed portions, and an array of rib-tickling entertainment. I'll definitely go back with some mates.”

“I'm sure this was once a Crouch End old man's pub. Someone must've refurbished it because now it's a completely different venue. “There are so many bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants to choose from in and around the Hoxton/Shoreditch/Old Street area, it's difficult to know where to start. Curtain Road is always a good place to kick things off, I reckon, and this tucked away bar is good for two reasons: the outside seating area and the beer selection. Nicely hidden too.”

“Trust the review up above because the ones below must be out of date. I remember the The Elusive Camel of old and that is now long since dead. A new Victoria cocktail bar has srpung up in its place and wow (!), what a difference. Gone are the pub sport screens and draught lagers. Now it’s all fancy designs and post-work chatter. “Is this a Balham restaurant or a Tooting Bec restaurant? Either way, it's mid-point location between the two is always going to be a problem, especially as it's next to a busy road. The Italian food is enjoyable, the wine list is pleasurable, and the service is affable. I'm quite keen to try out the weekend breakfasts on the terrace. Less cars, loads of sun, happy days.”

“I'd been to the original Villandry near Great Portland Street and had a great experience there. The new restaurant in Holborn is nowhere near as good, though. If you're after a quick bite to eat over a business meeting or you simply cant face a kebab in your own suburb after a school night pub session with your colleagues then maybe yes. Otherwise, a bit uninspiring really.”

“Heathrow International Airport Terminal 5: not the first place you think of when considering a fine English gastro pub experience. Yet, here it is. “Romance, the River Thames, modern Asian cuisine: this is one of my favourite London restaurants and these are the reasons why. Someone very special once took me here after a lovely walk along the South Bank. Moments after strolling past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, I was taken into a swanky hotel that was home to this truly amazing 'hidden gem'. The bar served some mean cocktails too and got me in the mood for.....well, love.”

“Surely one of the best cocktails bars in London. It's SO underground, in more ways than one. Considering the area, the cocktails are very cheap and very varied. You can only get away with wearing your uber-cool look in Freud, which means everyone there seems like they're in a band. I love it!”

Napa Restaurant, Chiswick & Brentford (Restaurant / Hotel)
“People of Chiswick, listen up. This place is such a find. Sure, it's a restaurant in a fairly innocuous hotel and is mainly used by M4 motorway users (probably), but this could well be one of the best restaurants in the area. Retro design, top quality nosh (I'd recommend anything from the 'Classic Napa' range) and a great little terrace area out front too.”

“If you're trying to bag yourself a 'media hottie' - of either sex - then this is THE place to come on a Friday night after work. “The novelty of eating Indian tapas wears thin soon after the bill arrives. Sure, this restaurant is in Soho, but there's not much glitz and glamour. The food is of a fairly high standard, but doesn't beat what's available in Tooting for half the price. Tip: sit near the front if you are going to give it a whirl, better for people watching.”
