“If you can find this secret restaurant you're in for quite a treat. Although the food is a little above gastropub level in terms of quality, the simplicity of the menu, the great location, the sustainable vibe and the speedy service make the whole experience a great one.”

“Good 2-4-1 cocktail deals before 11pm on a aSAturday and only 6 quid to get in. Plenty of bands and burlesque and a DJ for that price. Compact little club with a mixed crowd, which is great. Good tunes too. A tad cold though. And the toilet are minging. Ironic considering it used to be a public loo.”

“Love the layout with the booths and crazy walls. The music policy when I was here at the weekend with my girlfriend was old fashioned rock and roll (Johnny Cash, Elvis, etc) and everyone was having a blast twisting and shouting. The pizzas for £6 are a bonus, good for keeping your energy going. The down side was the bar. The bar staff weren't very helpful. Told us we HAD to buy two B52s at a time. Why?!! Plus no card payments for less than a tenner. Good times though.”

“Do not leave here without sampling a few cocktails in the bar area under Tower Bridge first. And make sure you book a window seat for dinner because this restaurant has the best views of Tower Bridge money can buy. The quality of the British cuisine served here is almost perfect. Hearty feeds for tourists and City workers alike.”

“Considering the amount of food that is needed for this banquet the kitchen does a fairly decent job of it. It isn't haute cuisine but it's not meant to be. It's all about the sword fighting, the juggling, and the shouting for more ale. Lots of fun for group bookings.”

“The cow pie is superb! Worth the trip alone. The menu is a tad expensive for what's on offer but if you're looking for a quiet, out-of-the-way drinking and dining experience in north-west London than this is the restaurant-pub for you. Nice little beer garden too.”

“I love this tiny bar. It's not just for beer drinkers and people who are waiting for their train. Anyone who works in the area should get in on the action too. Plus, the small alfresco spaces mean that, when the sunshine is out, it can provide a nice little haven in the midst of so much chaos. The range of beers, ales, stouts, lagers, bitters, and porters is magnificent.”

“The downstairs bar itself is reasonably good, boasting some interesting drink options (like the American Blue Moon wheat beer). Fairly laid back vibe, cheery service, enjoyable music. The real bonus though is the roof terrace right at the top. A tiny little alfresco space, best used before about 7pm in the summer to make the most of the sunshine. I went here on a first date, had a great time, and we're looking at a second date. It must have done the trick then.”

“Overall, for the asking price on some of the dishes, perhaps a little steep for what you pay for but generally a decent feed though. We ate in the street food ground floor section. The red meat dishes were easily the best and the mini kebab burger stood out. Nice cocktails too and quirky, Indian-Wahaca style vibe going on. Vibrant, buzzy atmosphere. It would be a good restaurant for lunches if you worked on Oxford Street or were out shopping at Selfridges.”

“It's a Thursday night, a group of 8 lads have been at the pub all night to wet the babies head (a recent Dad amongst our ranks), the pub has closed and we're determined to kick on and find some fun in the City. Amber, here we come, hangovers at work tomorrow. We all got in with ease, got served really quickly and the new father had a great time dancing to cheesy tunes until late. Very much where the suits hang out until the wee hours of the night.”

“My go-to spot as soon as I get off the tube at Old Street. The building itself is totally unique and the three large walls of glass are great for people watching and street art contemplation over a flat white coffee and almond croissant. Clapham Grand, Clapham (Bar / Club)
“I have mixed feelings about the Clapham Grand. Went to watch the England Italy quarter final there last night and although I like the space and although they have the largest sports screen in Europe and although there was plenty of atmosphere, there were a few issues that dissuade me from going again. Firstly, the security. The perfunctory bag check at the front door did little to persuade me that they had our best interests at heart (the bouncer was more interested in a sexy woman walking passed). Then when I told them we'd reserved a table last week I was told that my name wasn't on the list and that I might find somewhere to stand upstairs (not cool!). And then, when a small group of Italian fans decided to let the world know of their presence rather than asking them to perhaps be a little less obvious or station security nearer to them for their own safety, the security just watched on whilst pints were thrown back and forth and only turned up when it got really nasty and punches were thrown. The abr also ran out of lager so sold everyone cans for £3.50 a pop, Ridiculous! Plus, they only served lager, no ales! How hard can it be?”

“This is the best Indian curry house in Tooting, which we all know is the best area of London for this type of cuisine (not Brick Lane, you know it's true!). The fact that the restaurant is ALWAYS full is as indication of the quality of the food. The menu is HUGE too so you will always find what you need. Had a massive meal with beers for 20 quid the other night. Plus, you can eat quite late if you want.”

“A very average affair. The "free beer or glass of wine" offer is not as great as it seems. The wine is vinegar and the beer is tiny. The sauces don't have as much spice as I would have hoped, leaving the flavours of the dishes little to be desired. There are much better curry house on Brick Lane than this one: like Sheba, for example.”

“Sure, it's a Wetherspoons and sure it's full of slightly crusty looking old blokes but they're harmless and the beers are really cheap. Plus the range of beers is decent and the pub stays open until midnight during the week so if you fancy a late pint after you get off the tube....”

“I didn't eat in bar area (the restaurant instead is a must; excellent) but a stop off in the cocktail bar should always be on the cards prior to dinner. The staff behind the bar will chat to you about your likes and dislikes and I enjoyed going slightly off piste from the cocktail menu. They nailed it. The live piano player/singer also adds to the occasion. Sexy couples looking for romance, grab a stool at the bar.”

“Obviously the location is fabulous with near-perfect views of Tower Bridge, but it's the level of service that makes this French restaurant one of the best in London. Informative, relaxed, jovial, smart, quick, impeccable; everyone on the team at this restaurant is highly skilled at making the experience a complete one. The menu is not cheap but this is very much a special occasion restaurant. It would be perfect for couples celebrating a recent anniversary for example. That, and business dinners for client entertaining.”

“This is a wine bar for lovers. The amount of people I see snogging in the shadows down in the gritty, grimy, low-ceiling cellar only reinforces my faith in love in London. Grab a lovely bottle of red, snaffle a ramshackle wooden table in the cave, light a candle, and get smooching. First dates, blind dates, any kind of dates, it's all about the amour. Recommend grabbing a cheese platter too.”

“What an excellent find. This is one of my favourite little hidden secrets in London. Set amongst what is frankly a fairly drab area of south east London, this former train carriage has been turned into a colourful, affordable, and pleasantly relaxing cafe serving all kinds of yummy goodness. It has a great little alfresco section too and the staff are, naturally, all lovely too. Totally recommend it. Just don't tell everyone.”

“If you work or live in the Wimbledon area (either up in Wimbledon Village or down the hill with the hoi polloi) you could do much worse than stop off for a bite to eat at this friendly restaurant. When the weather has got its summer hat on the best place to enjoy your meal is at the back of the restaurant. And I don't mean just at the back where you can see. Tell the waiting staff that you'd like to sit "Out the back, in the garden" and they shall oblige. It has one of the most secluded and little known alfresco patios in all of south London. For anyone in south London looking to get away from the maddening crowds for a romantic meal, this is the place for you. The food is pretty decent and offers great value for money. There's nothing too original on the menu but they do source locally, which is always a bonus in my book. Plus, they have a decent wine list which includes the sparkling Nyetimber English white wine.”

The Terrace, Knightsbridge (Bar / Restaurant / Hotel)
“This is a nice little hidden gem of an alfresco terrace. It's hidden behind all the posh shops of Motcomb Street, in amongst the Michelin Star restaurants (Zafferano and Petrus). It's therefore a nice, affordable alternative to the expensive restaurants in the area. The Terrace has its own BBQ as well so freshly cooked meat smells waft across the Terrace from noon until late. It needs a little work to make it look amazing but in terms value for money, it's well worth a trip. Especially for the Afternoon Tea.”

It's different to many other strip clubs because the ladies are all actually enjoying themselves and there are less rules and regulations. “Myself and 3 friends ate here last night. It was a Monday. This is a key piece of information because the restaurant has a 50% off deal on Monday nights. We ended up having loads of starters, two beers each, plus mains with rice and prawn crackers to start and we paid less than a tenner each! Unbelievably amazing value for money. And the Vietnamese food that is served here is top notch. Apparently the chef is ex Wagamama and Busabi Eathai so the pan-Asian parts of the menu will be next on my order list (next monday?).”

The Riverfront, South Bank & Bankside (Bar / Restaurant)
“This is a little slice of east London's cool Shoreditch district transplanted to south London's South Bank. Everyone hanging out in this bar last night looked like they could live in Dalston: the girls were all beautiful, dressed is floral pattern dresses, thick rimmed glasses, often sporting a funky haircut; the chaps all had facial hair, top button done up, and thick rimmed glasses. A very cool bunch indeed. Most likely because (a) it's part of the British Film Institute's building so feeds into that culture vulture vibe, and (b) because it is right on the South Bank under one of the many bridges. A tres cool spot if ever there was one. Most people were drinking wine or beers (the Palm Amber Ale was rather tasty). I haven't eaten here yet but will make sure to do so very soon. My only gripe: the price. 3 pints for £15!! Ouch. Still, it's worth it. My new favourite bar.”

“This venue's transformation from fine dining restaurant to casual British restaurant will no doubt suit the tourist-heavy foot traffic (especially during the Olympics this year) who will be looking for hearty British fayre. The steaks are decent, and there is a decent variety of cuts too, in a variety of sizes to cater for all appetites. The service was very good: knowledgeable; eager to please; chatty; smiling. The portions are large enough to keep our American cousins happy too. The decor is subdued but as modern as it can be in such surroundings. Good to see English wines on the drinks list too. “What an awful place. I've never been for dinner but as an after hours club it's woeful. A fiver to get in, the prices are super steep, the staff are a bit arrogant, the tunes are far too cheesy, the crowd are boring ludites, and the stairs to the toilets are far too steep. My girlfriend walked down the wet stairs the other night, fell, and broke her ankle. “Not as crowded as the Defectors pub across the road (which is where the BBC congregates after a hard day at the TV coalface). A good selection of guest ales. Had a decent Timothy Taylor or three. Youthful tunage too (was humming along to a spot of Passion Pit at one point). Minus points for the congregating smokers on the front door step (us non-smokers would like to get in please) and the God-awful decor which hasn't been updated since the 1970s I think. “Indeed the steaks are excellent and the restaurant has some grand, opulent decor, even for a relatively tiny space. I also like the bar area with its high stools and seafood counter. The staff are observant and friendly and can offer recommendations. Shame the menu doesn't back them up really. Yawn! Very average food for quite a big asking price.”

“This cosy pub opposite the Liverpool Street station is obviously over run with workers from the City of London who are waiting for their train home back to the Shires. It's completely made of wood and feels almost as though you're drinking a pint on the galleon of an old ship. Lots of nooks and crannies and even a Vault where I believe they have comedy once a week. Good Youngs ales on tap. A few TVs for sports fans.”

“Excellent value for money to be had at this quirky Turkish restaurant. The portion size of my lamb cous cous kedra was huge. And boy was it delicious! The cous cous was ever so slightly dry but I actually liked it like that. I also got a cold moussaka starter and a glass of wine (average Merlot) all for only £20. The restaurant is very cool, dark and moody. Bags of character. I recommend a Thursday night because at some point a very attractive lady stands belly dancing around the restaurant. Oh what fun! The food is fantastic (all British sourced) and the cocktail list very imaginative. There's a decent number of English wines on the wine list and the decor is quirky. “First recommendation: BYOB. Sainsburys is just over the road so pop in there first for an on-special wine and then bring it with you to Tagine (I’m pretty sure they didn’t charge us corkage, or if they did, it wasn’t much). Lovely mixed sharing starters with bread and then a monstrously large lamb tagine for the main. The 6 of us shared one dessert, we were that stuffed. A really lovely, warm experience. “Probably the best range of beers anywhere in London. The pub itself is bright, very birght, due to the white walls and mirrored ceiling. There are stools and leather banquettes along one wall but it never seems crowded (not when I’ve been; always managed to pilfer a seat or two). Some people like to spill out onto the pavement outside when the weather is nice. Ladies: a high quotient of chaps here, just so you know. Best of all though is that range of beers. Truly astonishing. Probably about 30 or 40 on tap. Most of which I’ve never heard of, and I love beer. A beer lovers’ secret London hideout.”

“The thing that stands out the most about this bar-restaurant is the location underneath the railway tracks. From the outside it doesn't look like much but once through the glass front doors it's a huge cavernous space that is great for hiding in.
