Faulty Towers The Dining Experience Review

Top 10 things we learnt about the Faulty Towers Dining Experience when we visited:

1) The British institution that is Fawlty Towers is still alive and kicking in the form of the Faulty Towers Dining Experience. Despite only airing only 12 episodes, it was responsible for some of the most memorable comedic moments ever broadcast on TV.

2) Housed at the elegant Victorian Railway hotel, the Charing Cross, it’s not quite the Fawlty Tower Hotel of Torquay but it does offer an appropriately 1970s feel to the proceedings.

3) It isn’t only showing in London. It’s a worldwide phenomenon showing from Sweden to Sri Lanka.

4) It’s perhaps a victim of its own success with sold out shows every night. You start the evening in a packed bar, where even finding standing room is a challenge.

5) The stars of the show are not the food or hotel but Basil, Sybil and Manuel. Sybil’s entrance with her machine gunning seal laugh was enough to bring the house down.

6) The saying “they don't make them like that anymore” could not be truer. Political correctness goes out the window here, language barriers are made fun of, cultural differences are the centre of jokes and yes, don’t be offended if you are German.

7) Unlike the performance, the food is played incredibly safe here. No prawn Goebbels, Hermann Goering or Colditz salads here, its onion soup, roast chicken and cheesecake. Despite the lack of adventure, most guests I spoke to seemed content. “It’s meant to be 1970s food” was the common answer.

8) Hen parties, stag parties, birthday parties, graduation parties are the order of the day here. On the night I went, Sybil took almost a ten minute segment to congratulate each group individually. I was almost expecting Sybil to congratulate me for reviewing the experience.

9) Luckily for the diners, the kitchen is spotless and the dining hall is spotless. No chance of catching the bubonic plague here. Although I would look out for a loose rat here and a pair of false teeth there, as the favourite scenes from the series are played out.

10) Only a third of the proceedings are scripted, so it’s always worth revisiting the experience again and again. What next, I wonder? Blackadder the medieval dining experience at the Tower of London perhaps?

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience Food Menu

All tickets include a '70s-style three-course meal and a two-hour show. At both lunch and dinner shows, the meal comprises one soup, one main course, one dessert. Special dietary requirements will be met and can be advised ahead of the show or on the night. The meal should be viewed as a prop to the show - very good, but not haute cuisine. Typical menu for Jan-April season is spiced carrot & fennel soup, chicken breast & shank coq au vin, black forest delice.
