Bar 366 Review

Best for: sweet cocktails; 30 and upwards professionals in south London; epic games of I-Spy.

Great: decor; attention to detail; and use of premium brands.

“Sup, J-Dizzle.”

“Sup, C-Dog.”

We slip each other some skin and complete the transaction with a one-arm hug. Our bromance has begun.

As ‘street’ greetings go, ours is highly unconvincing. We’re both thin, ex-public school chaps in our late 30s, each sporting a fruity moustache, and wearing a pea coat. There may even be a pair of brogues involved.

Lucky for us, our camp predilections will be well catered for at Bar 366 in Earlsfield. As J-Dizzle is a photographer, and I, the C-Dog, a writer, we both have leanings towards art, and this cocktail bar has aspirations of Damien Hirst scale. Topic one on the bromance agenda: the psychotic aesthetics of Bar 366.

Being creatively inclined, we both heap praise on the bar’s pastiche: bric-à-brac of the mentally unhinged festoon the walls and surfaces. This is Wacky Racers all the way: peculiar wallpaper; menus daubed on the ceiling; ex-toilet flowerpots; empty picture frames; former-door tabletops replete with knockers (yes, I said knockers); frilly knickers above the bar (yes, I said knickers); photos of The Queen; photos of Manuel from Fawlty Towers. There’s plenty to look at, and not just pretty ladies. As first dates go, this is a decent bar to start in. If the conversation sags, commence a killer game of i-Spy!

As two gents enjoying each other’s pleasant company of a Friday eve, we naturally gravitate towards talk concerning love, sex and weddings. One of us recently got engaged, the other recently became single. This bawdiness requires appropriate liquid refreshments, so we start with the classics: mojito and martini.

“That’s the best mojito I think I’ve ever had,” says he, smugly licking his lips (especially as it was only £7). It arrives in a jam jar containing mint grown in the bar’s garden and has just enough bite to leave its mark on my mate. My slightly more expensive pomegranate martini is a Monet of a cocktail; meaning, it’s subdued, contains colourful flowers, and looks much better than it tastes.

As the bromance conversation deteriorates into politics, the murkier and more herbaceous cocktails begin to appear. The intriguing and entirely satisfying Earth cocktail, an ice-cream-dropped-in-the-dirt concoction, is made with vanilla vodka and served in a terra cotta plant pot with a raw chilli as a garnish, and so delivers the right temperament to discuss matters sport (typical men!).

We Earls of Earlsfield become a tad nostalgic when a New Kids On The Block cocktail is then brought to our table. It’s rum, lychee and coriander combination reminds us of that summer trip we once dreamt of taking, and for me, it’s a little too sweet on the after taste and could do with a salted rim to even it out (couldn’t we all).

I note that many of the cocktails seem either too sour or too sweet for a sensitive fellow such as myself. They are not, however, too sweet for old Willy Wonka across the table, who relishes every sugary drop.

“You’re sweet enough, Sugar Tits,” he doesn’t say, before actually talking about finaces.

Money is brooding, vulgar, and bitter, so the espresso martini and smoked fashioned cocktails are adequate libations to see us through the subject. The latter is a cocktail variation on an old fashioned, smoked in a milk bottle with cinnamon, lavender, and hickory chips. If the mojito is an 8 o’clock cocktail, and the pomegranate martini a 9 o’clock cocktail, then this little beauty is midnight.

When men get to drinking dark liquor, soon they get to talking ‘bout music. The bangin’ Friday night house at Bar 366 is a tad clubby for us oldies and as time and cocktails pass, we observe several groups arriving for a couple of drinks before moving on elsewhere. It can’t be the quality or price of the cocktails that puts them off, so it has to be the music. Bar 366, our advice: look to old school funk, soul and vintage swing and there you will find your Friday nights!

Although only one of us is completely swayed by the cocktails, we both offer merit to Bar 366 for its minutiae. Aside from the obvious vividness in decor, the table service, the take away after-party packs, the fresh popcorn, the free wifi, the homemade infusions, the fresh flowers, the wine tastings, and the lack of a whoop-whoop happy hour all create an easily accessible cocktail bar for a predominantly 30s, understandably girl-heavy, clientele.

Leaving, we walk across the road to the conveniently placed overland station, give each other a need-for-speed high-5, and agree that if Bar 366 is the future of bromance, then we’re both moving to Earlsfield (as long as his soon-to-be wife concurs).

“I first went to their St Johns Hill Bar 366 and loved that! So we decided to give the Earlsfield bar a shot. Amazing! I loved the fact they are obviously the same, but yet so different. I want one to open in Fulham, come on 366? The cocktails are to die for and amazing service. 5 stars! J”

“Finally, a mojito with it's dignity back! SO tired of the run of the mill mojito pumped up to the nines with sugar water. refreshingly bitter sweet and lots of fresh mint. Is it really true that they have a herb garden outback??? Nice friendly bar, beers and wines etc also. Love the menu on the ceiling. Only way to read it is flat on back from downing the cocktails.”

“I was dragged to Earlsfield for a night out with a few mates and was very unsure what it would have to offer. We went into Bar 366 and I was astounded by the decor, service and cocktails. I am not a big cocktail drinker, but I loved experimenting all the unique and strange cocktails served up in Jam Jars, Flower pots with amazing garnishes and the cocktails were really amazing. I Love this place and would love one in Clapham, however, I will be going to Earlsfield again just to visit Bar 366. This Bar is must visit Place in London and it will over shadow most West End cocktail Bars.....”

“Somebody with a creative flair has obviously had a hand in the reincarnation of this bar. The decor is really quirky and there's so much going on you'll never be short of talking points. The cocktails are reasonably priced and inventive in their ingredients and presentation. They are quite sweet or sour, though, but this is probably a ploy to get more ladies through the door, and it seems to be working. Professionals of 30 upwards will probably like this south London cocktail bar more than younguns.”

“What a transformation! Bar 366 is now cool, retro with really friendly staff. The cocktails are out of this world, better than any other feeble attempts in the area! I love Thursday as they do something different every week (Burlesque, Live bands, New style music DJ's etc.) I must admit I never venturd into Bar 366 before the new management took over, it was full of old men watching sport, now its full of nice trendy people, but not pretentious (How could anywhere be pretentious in Earlsfield). I am happy to say that the number of women that frequent Bar 366 has increased dramatically and I love it. The new decor is cool, retro, funky and a feast for your eyes. The music is great and it changes every day,so you never get bored. I love the place. AJ”

“My friends and I popped into Bar 366 on Friday on our way to The Wandle and fell in Love with the place. The service, cocktails and music were brilliant, the place has changed so much and what a transformation it is. We stayed all night and had a fantastic time. Thank you to Edurado and the team, you really looked after us. I will be back next week. Bar 366's biggest fan!”

“Very friendly bar staff and now they have refurbed it, it is trendy but warm, it's like having a beer in your front room. Bar 366 always has something going on at the weekends and is ideal for a quiet beer in the week. Its my favourite bar in Earlsfield.”

“Quite a good, laidback bar full of Earlsfield locals with no pretentions. Thy could do with installing serveral smoke extractors as the low ceiling and the poor ventilation can make the pub quite stuffy for the non smokers.”
