The Light Bar and Restaurant Review
Sitting in your City office in the afternoon, just longing after that good night out that so rarely comes around, you might want to set your eyes on The Light. Located on Shoreditch High Street, it is just a stone’s throw away from the heart of the City. As you enter, the tasteful mixture of industrial brick and steel décor, and the trendy atmosphere is sure to boost your self-confidence a few notches, as you think, “Well, don’t I feel trendy now?”
If your plan is to eat first, and then party, The Light is an all-in-one venue. The French/Mediterranean cuisine in the restaurant is sure to delight both taste and sight, and you have an entire range of prices, from a £10, two course dinner, or something more exquisite from the full a-la-carte menu.
After dinner, the immense hall housing the main bar is sure to be inviting enough to make you want to sit down for a drink or more, while chatting away or just taking in the spacious, industrial atmosphere. Upstairs, DJ’s spin tunes until 2 in the morning on weekends, or is the set for a private VIP party. The venue is a far cry from the City pubs crowded with after-workers, and although particular in style, it might just appeal to you....read more

“The venue itslef is ok. It has a decent outdoor seating area, and is not overly crowded, but they have the most incredibly rude staff in London. The bar staff don't know the first thing about customer service, and complaining doesn't make any difference.”

“Great atmosphere and space! We were there last night. The only downside was having to put up with a very rude waitress! Yes! You know who you are... the brunette one who doesn't like to do Mojitos! You were horrible! And if you don't like to do them, don't work in a bar then!!!

“Works do last night, 22/24 turned up. Had to wait for 'reduced' menus to be printed. Had to wait to give orders one person serving drinks for our table same person taking food order. Lots of time wasted with same waiting person removing and replacing glasses and getting irate about which glasses to take and which to leave. Got there at 7pm spoons went down for dessert at 10pm - had enough walked out. Fantastic location, menu looks good food on plate okay, but the menu talked up something a bit more enticing. Good beverage menu. Attitude of two serving staff poor the guy who served the bread looked like he had just finished servicing someones car. Save The Light, dismiss the staff.”

“Modern, funky looking bar with some slight tacky features - such as the tendant in the toilet begging for a tip for passing you a hand towel. There is a poor selection of wine and beer at the bar. The music, if you can hear it, is good..
The bouncers are rude and from what I have seen can be quite violent.. Definitely a place to watch your step and not to cause a stir..”

“To be honest the meal was tiny in proportion, service was slack, portions tiny and the waiters slow and rude. The fact that we were on a lunch break from work mean't nothing to them. Our timed requests were greated with hostility and angst, from what only could be described as a teenage student on acne pills. The whole experiance resulted in a table of frustrated angry guests who went back to work feeling ripped off and upset after the manager threw a fuss over the service charge, which obviously we were not prepared to pay, and then proceeded to back chat to other customers regarding the issue. All in all the worst service I have had in a very long time!

“8 of us went to this bar last Friday… to celebrate a colleague’s birthday. We sat at a bar in the ‘cobbled garden area’ … The evening started ok… but would turn out to be one of the worst evenings we have had in a city bar. As per the comments below… the staff were quite simply rude and made no effort to cover up the fact they couldn’t give a damn. The bar staff served at such a slow pace… that any slower they would come to a complete stop. The food we ordered (two bowls of chips) took nearly an hour to arrive. My female colleague was standing in a queue which was at least 8 girls long into the hallway. I had already been to the toilet in the gents. She was so desperate to pee she was panicking. I suggested that she use a cubicle in the gents… which she did. The attendant saw her enter the cubicle and started shouting abuse… He then proceeded to open the cubicle door with a coin… I was trying to stop him as she would have been sitting on the loo… He opened the door and made her leave while pulling up her knickers. The security outside was absolutely disgusting when I explained how wrong the whole situation was… He responded (without looking at me) who are you…. If you don’t like… eff off… then heaved his way into me…
As a group we must have spent in excess of £250 that evening…. And to be treated like that makes me so angry.
Because of where we were sitting in the garden area the pebbles were covered in what seemed like a cement dust… which had covered our shoes and took a”

“I agree with the last two reviewers. Went there on a Friday evening and was greeted by a pointless queue outside, rude bouncers, and one of the worse soundsystems I've ever heard in a bar. Yes it looks trendy and modern on the outside, but inside it's pretty standard stuff - the food's okay, but nothing special. Special mention must go to the rude staff - the place has the feel of being run by the mafia. So if you like poor service, rubbish music and not being able to hear the person next to you then this is the place for you...”

“Very rude door staff. Bolshy waiting staff. Reasonable food. Overall though, lots of much better places just up the road so don't bother.
Friend of mine reserved a table and they gave it to someone else with no apology.”

“We arranged to reserve an area which the staff then gave to another group. To make up for their error they did not offer any free drink but the private use of the upsatirs bar. This was alright until 2 hours later when all unsundry joined us and then one of the members from our private party was asked to pay to obatin entry to the area.. If they had not made a mistake in the first place we would not be in the ''private members bar'' (otherwise called the area for people who can''t afford shoreditch bars and are 80''s throw backs and up themselves) and be sitting downstairs without haing to pay for the priviledge. Until this time we were going to book one of our office xmas parties there, so about £20K of business but now they have lost it. When I told the ''manager'' he replied whatever!!! I don''t think art students with daddies credit card can keep this bar going for ever do you?”

“Nice bar, generally good food and a great atmosphere upstairs - just a shame about the service! Surly waitresses who seemed to think that anything they did was a special favour to the client and who were positively outraged if one brought drinks through from bar to restaurant [presumably because they couldn't then charge compulsory service charge on them]. Amd positively rude toilet attendants [not that any bar in the whole, wide world needs these, anyway] who would have a good go at one if one didn't leave enough money for the sweet lollies in the toilets. A shame. Under new ownership this could be a wonderful all-in night out.”

“The Light Bar is situated where Shoreditch meets the city and the clientele reflects this- a mix of creative media types and suits (so something for everyone then!). A good starting point on a Friday night, the bar is spacious inside and there’s enough room outside on the terrace to soak up the last of the day’s sun. The restaurant is pretty good and once done there you’re only 5 minutes form some of the great bars in Shoreditch.”

“Lots of people come here after work it seems and I can see why. It's high ceiling and minimalistic decor make it a great place to come and relax. There are mainly picnic table seating with a few sofa's scattered around the edge, which you have to come early for, the food is the usual but decent bar grub. There's also an upstairs which seems to be a restaurant which I will, with some luck, try sometime.”
