Del’ Aziz Review

Book a table at Del’ Aziz

The best evidence of Bermondsey becoming an ever more hip and cosmopolitan area comes from the opening of a new branch of Del’Aziz, a harmonious fusion of the best of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food and drink.

There is pretty much a full list of a food fan’s desires on offer, all set against the backdrop of a bustling marketplace-style ambiance. Customers can take advantage of a brasserie, a bakery and a delicatessen all on one site, not to mention a gift shop.

However, just as significant as all this is the dedication of the people behind Del’Aziz to fine dining. There is a formidable line-up of hot and cold mezze to start, with nods to Israeli, Turkish, Persian and Moroccan cuisine. If you find the narrowing down too difficult then it’s well worth going with a mixed mezze platter. I tried the vegetarian one and highlights included a croquette of falafel with a delightful smoky flavour and tzatziki made with juicy cucumber and indulgent thick Greek yoghurt.

The mains are cunningly split between offerings from the charcoal grill, those from the hob or oven and an array of burgers. A pasta, steak and catch of the day are also thrown in for good measure. If kebabs are what get you hungry then it’s worth considering both the Persian chicken kebab with saffron (tender and juicy) or the tiger prawn kebab with chilli and lime (the prawns are both sizeable and meaty). The accompanying basmati rice with saffron was as good as you’ll taste anywhere in London.

Round off your meal by selecting one of the eye-catching selection of gâteaux and tarts on display. The raspberry tart sits perfectly on the dividing line between sweet and tart. What’s more, it’s just perfect washed down with the Del’Aziz signature tea, a divine combination of green tea and fresh mint.

With variety and dedication to quality like this on offer, it’s tempting to cancel those budget airline tickets and let the Med come to you.

Del’ Aziz Description

Del’aziz is the first all round Mediterranean Delicatessen & Brasserie in London. The realization of the dreams of husband and wife team Shahrokh & Zehra Parvin,

Design to mimic a Mediterranean market place, Del’aziz is a Mecca for food lovers. A delicatessen, bakery, brasserie and gift shop offering an array of products, from freshly baked breads to pastries, olive oil and vinegars, chocolate and confectionary, dried fruit & nuts to hand painted ceramic plates and mugs, mint tea pot and glasses to Mediterranean cookbooks and bespoke hampers.

The elegant restaurant explores the cuisines of North Africa and the Eastern and Central Mediterranean - from Morocco and around The Lebanon, through to Greece and Turkey. Executive chef Mike Smith has created an exciting menu that capture the intense, exotic, scented flavours prevalent throughout the region. In keeping with the style of food, diners can enjoy their meal in the stylish restaurant complete with chestnut tables, hot pink glass columns, black lattice woodwork, warm rust walls decorated with brushed gold motif and luxurious olive leather chairs. Alternatively, adjourn to the striking alfresco area on Bermondsey Square, with its twinkling lanterns, ideal for a romantic evening.

The seductive bar is an ideal retreat for an indulgent after-work drink or an aromatic late night cocktail. Large copper Turkish tables adorned with steel and glass lanterns combine with a mirrored ceiling, hand-painted shisha pipes and a stunning backdrop of pink velvet curtains to create a glamorous vibe. Pull up a stool at the oak and mirrored bar, accentuated by a bespoke fushia and copper light shade, or relax on the alluring, low-slung coral cowhide chairs, pony skin fringed stools or the shimmering banquette.

Take a step outside onto the Square to enjoy the variety of shisa tobacco on offer, from red or green apple to mint, orange or watermelon. Those who prefer a smoother blend will enjoy the ‘Shisha Royale’, instead of water the hookah pipe is filled with cold milk to soften the smoke and brandy or tequila, which adds a hint of flavour.
