The Absinthe Bar Description

Marie Corelli said: “Let me be mad... mad with the madness of absinthe, the wildest, most luxurious madness in the world.”

Absinthe had its heyday in the mid-to-late 1800s, a firm favourite of aspiring writers and artists who would hang out in Parisian cafes quaffing the highly potent spirit and searching each other’s souls for creative inspiration. However, it was banned from France for its alleged harmful effects in 1915 because of the addition of thujone (or grande wormwood to you and I), which reputedly had mind-altering effects. The ban was relaxed and later lifted when it was agreed that the amount of thujone in the spirit was lowered to within an agreed limit.

But all is not lost. Quite the contrary, absinthe is making a comeback. If you’re going to drink absinthe and relish in “the wildest, most luxurious madness in the world”, then it seems only fitting to do so in one of the most luxurious venues in the capital, and London’s first dedicated absinthe bar, housed in the basement space at The Brompton Bar & Grill, launched in July 2011, is that very place. There you can try absinthe in all its guises: as a cocktail (Death in the Afternoon, a mixture of champagne and absinthe, was Ernest Hemingway’s favourite afternoon tipple) or by drinking it in its traditional method, by pouring ice water over a sugar cube through a perforated spoon.

The award-winning Brompton Bar & Grill holds regular absinthe master classes and has recently launched a new absinthe menu, comprising of many different absinthe cocktails.

“I read in the Evening Standard that The Brompton Bar & Grill had opened an Absinthe Bar, so my work colleagues and I thought it would be a great way to end the week by getting better acquainted with the green fairy. We had a wonderful evening and the cocktails were delightful.”
