Capote y Toros Description
Capote y Toros is the latest venture from Abel Lusa’s much fêted Cambio de Tercio group, combining the authentic Spanish cuisine and warm welcome for which the company is justly renowned, with the world’s most extensive sherry list – 100 and counting.
Step into this small and intimate restaurant and be transported into a neighbourhood bar in downtown Cádiz – but one with a fun-loving twist.
Sit at the bar or at one of the eight tables and feast on a selection of the best Iberico pork charcuterie from Spain’s finest producer, Sanchez Romero Carvajal. Or opt for traditional Andalucían-inspired tapas such as Gambas, Salmorejo Cordobes, Pringa, Atun de Almadraba, Sardinas Marinadas and Ajo Blanco - all made with the best and freshest seasonal ingredients - or perhaps one of the innovative specials devised by Cambio de Tercio’s renowned Head Chef, Alberto Criado. Prices range from £4 to £7 per tapas.
This fine fare is accompanied by the aforementioned sherry selection. Compiled with the help of Jerez-born expert Peter Dauthieu, this incredible line-up will banish forever the stereotypical view of sherry and allow it to take up its rightful position as a contemporary, sophisticated and accessible drink.
From dry Finos and Manzanillas through to sweet Pedro Ximénez by way of forgotten treasures specially bottled for Capote y Toros, the list is a revelation in sherry drinking.
All are available by the glass with 25 labels served in half bottles. For experts and novices alike, the restaurant features a brilliant tasting selection, comprising five sherries, at just £11 per person.
An integral part of the Capote y Toros offering, sherry is also used as a staple ingredient of many of the tapas. Complimenting the drinks list meanwhile is no less than 400 wines, ranging in price from £19 to £2,000 a bottle.
Also ensuring an unforgettable atmosphere is live flamenco music twice a week.
All elements combine to ensure the fulfilment of Abel Lusa’s desire to create the capital's most authentic Andalucían bar, one that follows in the illustrious footsteps of famous Cádiz watering holes like La Venta de Vargas, where legendary flamenco musician Camarón de la Isla began his career and Casa Manteca.
Capote y Toros is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 5pm to 11.30pm. There are no reservations.
Capote y Toros is the fourth restaurant in the Cambio de Tercio group which also comprises the eponymous, multi award-winning flagship restaurant (and favourite haunt of Rafa Nadal) which was opened by Abel Lusa in 1995 and Tendido Cero (both on the Old Brompton Road) and Tendido Cuatro in Fulham....read more
