The Blue Anchor Review
The Blue Anchor is featured in these Guides:
The Blue Anchor is a more traditional pub than it's next door rival The Rutland. Situated on the river, with a great view of Hammersmith Bridge, it's a perfect location for the closing stages of the 'boat race' if you get there early enough to grab a spot.
Inside is very cozy, with a small bar and often only two bar staff, which can be frustrating on a summers day, when you're gagging to quench that thirst. Although The Blue Anchor loses the majority of it's youngish punters when the cooler weather kicks in, it's still worth popping in for the mulled wine on a winters day.
The Blue Anchor Description
The Blue Anchor is a unique traditional riverside family run pub offering a warm and sociable atmosphere. Located by the Thames a short walk from Hammersmith Bridge. First licensed in 1722 it affords a true traditional pub experience.
Four real ales always on tap as well as a wide range of premium lagers and ciders. We carry a fine range of old and new world wines. The food menu is interesting and appetizing. Only fresh produce is used and the menu is changed on a regular basis. Besides the A la carte menu there is a light meal menu.If you are after a bit of afternoon sun, drinks and tasty food then the Blue Anchor is the number one destination for a great day or night out!
The upstairs 'River Room' is a popular venue with great views of the River. Available for private hire it has a separate bar and toilet facilities....read more

“The pub inside is fairly small - although there is a hidden-away are at the back full of comfy Chesterfields - so for anyone who likes ales and cosy traditional pubs, this is the place. For those that like to be out in the sun on a hot spring/summer's day next to the River Thames, then this is also the pub for you. Fantastic al fresco eating and drinking, if you can get a seat. Obviously very popular when the Oxford-Cambridge boat race is on.”

“I chose the Blue Anchor as it was reasonably near to Fulham football ground and was really looking forward to going there and having a nice meal and a roast beef meal b4 the game.
We duly arrived about 1pm to an empty pub which had no meals prepared and we had to wait for about 20 minute for a meal that was just boil in the bag and included the stringiest toughest beef i have ever tasted no yorkshires but bread. What a waste of time & money. The beer selection is limited and the bar staff have no knowledge of beer thinking that Mild is a weak bitter.
I used to use this pub on a regular basis in the 80s and cannot believe what has happened to it. Best advice save your money and find the nearest Wetherspoons. Highlight of the visit seeing the West Ham fans chartered cruiser passing by !!!”

“These guys have done a fantastic job on refurbing this pub. While I didn't mind the old boozer it was small, dark, dirty, smelly and in a real state of dis-repair (I guess some people would call that character!). They have kept many of the original features and I think have succeeded in maintaining the charm and history of the pub(it dates from 1722). There are some wonderful old pictures of it on display). They have also opened a second floor with fantastic views over the river. Its family run so the staff are very pleasant and keen to help. Spoke to the new owner who has a genuine affection for his pub. Good selection of Beer and everyone in my group thought the food was great(would never have eaten here before). We will be back. A firm favourite!”

“Great location on the river front looks warm and inviting with candles lit in the window. Not inviting when inside... staff miserable and not welcoming. We asked when we could order food and was told a curt not till 6 and walked away. We were meeting up with 8 friends who all wanted to eat and they were all treated the same, we had to wait till one minuite past 6.....should have walked out but it was a cold night and didn't want to dampen the mood any more. The food was ok but just plonked on table. Seems this place doesn't have to try because of it's location. Would not go again.”

“The pub has been done up, but not sure if it's any better. To be honest i think it's trying too hard. Still better than the Rutland and the views in the evening are some of the best on the Thames (was there on Friday night and the sunset was spectacular). But that traditional pub wholesomeness that the Blue Anchor had has gone a bit with the re-furb. (And the prices have increased...) Why are people allowed to rip out the inside of traditional old pubs? Surely there must be some preservation law in place? Would give 5 stars for the view. Service is good.”

“Just awesome really. Riverside location with some of the best views in London. Drank outside until the sun went in and then sat in their upstairs bar with panoramic views of the river. I think the pub has been done up great (never realised it was so historic!). Good selection of food on the menu and given the quality of the food and location of the pub we all thought it was awesome value. Looking forward to returning this weekend.”
