Cottons Caribbean Bar & Rhum Jungle Description

Cottons' entrance on the corner of the 'infamous' Exmouth Market is deceptively modest. Once inside the restaurant opens out before you with the Lounge Bar, their lavish bar area which is adjacent to the main restaurant dining area.

Downstairs is the Rum Jungle, Cottons' exclusive Rum Bar with a comfortable seating where you can dine or relax in plush surroundings. With a dining capacity of 100 persons, Cottons Islington has been designed and decorated to capture the tropical ambience of the West Indies.

“the staff are incredibly rude! Only the young waitress was nice, the rest were the rudest waitresses Ive ever come across. They made our special evening very bitter. We had to wait for an eternity for our drinks & food to arrive & its way too overpriced. Very unhappy and never coming back again. Very disappointed!”

“Went with group of friends ( part of 8) using discount vouchers (via KGB scheme). Somewhat disappointed to be immediately told that ther would be a £2 per hear surrcharge as we were using these vouchers. This was NOT stated previously. Service was a littel slow and eventually gave our orders for food and cocktails. Cocktails arrived but were noticabely smaller than "full paying" customers. Since the majority of the cocktails was ice or soda this seems somewhat miserly. I choose rice and peas with Jerk Chicken - a traditional carribean dish. Chicken was okay-ish but rice & peas definately below par considering its from a restaurant. Dessert was some strange mis of cream, cake crums with a tiny amount of rum - very disappointing. However, since we were using discounted vouchers we didnt feel too agreived but could not recommend this as quality of meals is lacking. Is a bit silly to straight away slap on a £2 surcharge as we would have tipped considerably more. DONT SKIMP ON COCKTAIL SIZE!! It comes across as a bit stupid Service was slow but friendly only really let down by quality of food.”

“Went to Cottons for a friends birthday this weekend. The restaurant is set in a good location and the decor is very nice so we thought we would be in for a good night of great caribbean food. I cannot fault our waiter as he made every efforts to cater to our needs, despite the fact that he was also waiting on a few other tables at the same time. The main bug bear was the food. I ordered the Chilli chicken for starters which was luke warm and the chicken was very bland tasting. Other members of my party had fish fritters, soup which were ok. The main course was a big disappointment to most of us. The majority went for the jerk spatchcock chicken with rice and peas. This came looking really appetising as the chicken was a lovely baked colour. I am not one for hot food so I was able to get my jerk sauce separately which was a good thing as the other members of my party had their sauce smeared all over the chicken and they found this way too hot and overbearing. The chicken lacked genral seasoning and tasted very bland and the sauce way too hot to accompany it. The curry goat and rice seemed the best bet and at least there was one happy camper at our table. DESSERT: BIG LET DOWN. Apple Crumble is not stewed apple with sprinkled breadcrumbs on the top. This is what it resembled. The crumble I am used to has a crunchy buttery taste and is sealed together. This one was not so at all. The drinks are most definitely over priced and bump up the bill very quickly. All in all the service we received was good but the food was not up to the standards we expect for a caribbean restaurant. Lose the hot pepper sauce and start marinating your meats to let the flavours soak in overnight. I will not be recommending this restaurant to my friends. Oh, and the toilet area which is too near the kitchen for my liking had a strange pungent aroma wafting about. Sorry Cottons but this has to be told. Maybe the proper chef was on annual leave.”

“it was my birthday and i had pre-aranged for space for 15 people. once we had arrived there was not much communication about where exactly we were sitting and when we coudl take our seats. after waiting over at the bar for about 20 mins we decided to just sit down. we ordered our mains and startes together and we waited for about 35 mins for the starters!!!! the starters were OK (they were not fresh but they were not too bad... however from the mains onwards it was down hill.....a few of the party ordered the curry goat which should have been vibrant and tasty - however theirs were watery and pretty tasteless.....the remaining party ordered the mixed grill which was terrible...the chicken was hard and dry. once the management were notified instead of appologising they argued with us!!! the poor waiter tried his best but i would never go there again and i would consider it too if i were you!!! if you do insist on going get the fish dishes as these are actually fresh!! a lazy restaurant who are only surviving on the strength of their reputation!”

“Went to Cottons on Friday night with a friend and had a wonderful evening. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Had the salt fish fritters which were divine, followed by the red snapper which was cooked to perfection. My friend was equally pleased with her callaloo and feta tart, followed by swordfish. The staff are attentive without being overbeariing, and the lovely, friendly manager made time to check we were enjoying ourselves and were happy with the food. We were sitting upstairs which is relaxing, clean and well set out. Downstairs there is live music and more of a buzzy atmosphere. Too many mojitos meant no room for dessert, but they sounded great! overall, a thoroughly enjoyable evening with delicious food at good prices - would thoroughly recommend!”

“Went Cottons Islington last Saturday again, with my partner this time as I had a good time last December when I went with work colleagues. Had a 9.15 reservation for which we had to wait 10 min at the bar (still great cocktails!!). After being seated by the manager (don't know if its the same one as the one mentioned in the last review because he was very friendly to us while being under a lot of stress from a party of about 20 people from an earlier booking) we had another cocktail and ordered food. The food was very nice (again) and the service was very relaxed although the restaurant was full and buzzing. So again I had a great time at Cottons Islington and will definitely return again! PS I don't understand some of these bad reviews they've been having but what I did notice this time is that certain customers were VERY demanding towards staff, to put it mildly...”

“Food was OK but the service was awful. We were actually asked to move table before finishing our meal due to their 1hr 45 min booking policy and the restaurant manager was extremely rude to us (Islington), he really spoilt our evening. No apology when we were asked to move and the table we were moved to hadn't even been laid. After the restaurant manager's hagling and rudeness we didn't at all feel comfortable and therefore didn't want a free desert. We were truly astonished that there wasn't any discount AND they had added a service charge!!! We obviously refused to pay that and shall not return. A full set of cutlery was missing for one of the party members and the bread was removed before a replacement was made. Stay well clear of this restaurant if you want an enjoyable non rushed night out watch out for the rude restaurant manager at the Islington branch.”

“I attended Cottons at Islington looking forward to another enjoyable time there. Whenever i attend Cottons it seems like its a treat i allow myself whenever i feel i've done something worthy of celebrating but imagine my surprise at my visit on friday 8th august, 2008. We sat down for the 9.15 sitting, looking forward to some caribbean food, the waitress came over to take our order promptly but it wasn't until 10.25 before we received our starter. We felt that, that was due to the intervention of a waiter who saw us sitting there looking dejected. He came over & asked whether we had eaten yet, which we replied no. After eating the plates took longer than usual to be cleared away & yet again we waited for our main course, which arrived at 10.45. Not exactly an ideal time to be eating. We were so upset we just paid the £50 & left with a bitter taste in our mouth with the whole experience. The food was excellent as we've come to expect but the service was appalling. We thought the other side may have been busy but it was less busy than our side. It's very embarrassing when people who have arrived after you manage to get their starter & main course before you. I shall certainly think again before attending the Islington branch of Cottons. Food great, atmosphere great, servce appalling.”

“Some would say i am the current regular. Recommend the jerk mixture - wonderful. Love the cocktails there, they are banging. Will be going to the Islington branch for a well deserved birthday do. Lovely.”

“Went there on 17 feb. Waited1/2 hour for starter and another 1/2 hour for nothing. The waiters in the basement dungeon could only drag the tables and chairs. I paid and left. I will not return!!”
