Lost Society Review
Book a table at Lost Society
Lost Society is featured in these Guides:
As soon as I walk through the door of Lost Society I like it. The 16th Century characteristics from the barn it was previously are played up by low lighting, candles, and a dramatic chandelier above the ground floor bar – itself set against a background of old shelves, filled with books and liquor bottles. A bowl of freshly picked mint, prepared for the mojitos, wafts a delicious scent that hits you as you walk past and follows you up the narrow staircase – with a wall of framed pictures - to the decadent mezzanine area above, where my friend and I sat for the night. A generously-sized table in the corner next to a grand fireplace gave us a great view of the busy main Wandsworth road outside. Our fellow diners included a table of eight celebrating a birthday, a couple soaking up the candlelit intimacy, and another large group of friends behind. The music from downstairs – a mix of eclectic, Ibiza-like beats – provided the perfect Friday night soundtrack to our evening.
On the table a fairy-adorned booklet revealed by far the vastest cocktail list I’ve come across: the usual classics, plus an array of mojitos, champagnes and caipirinhas mixed in unique and exotic ways. The Mango & Chilli mojito I settled on was outstanding – smooth El Dorado 3yrs rum, mango puree, chilli flakes, fresh mint and lime – exactly what you want in a cocktail, with a wonderful after kick from the chilli – a must try! Then there are the bartender’s weird and wonderful sounding creations, which could be mistaken for desserts – including The Humble Crumble: a concoction of Tuala, cloudy apple juice, cinnamon syrup, orange bitters, raspberry puree, pear jam and ginger beer. I didn’t have a chance to try it, but it’ll be the first one I’ll order when I next visit. If cocktails aren’t for you, there’s selection of draft and bottled beers, including German imports such as Paulaner, ciders, fruit juices, tequilas, the list goes on and on – whatever your favourite tipple, you’ll find it and discover new ones along the way.
The meal choices wouldn’t look out of place in a top restaurant, but without the hefty price tag; a reasonable two courses for £18.50 or three for £23.50. After much deliberating – all of the options sounded inviting - my friend and I opted for the teriyaki marinated duck, spicy lentil and mango salad, and the risotto nero with pan-fried squid, garlic and chilli, respectively. We complemented our meal with a deep smooth Rioja reserve supped from lovely bucket sized glasses. From past experience, risotto can either be very good or disappointingly standard, but the generous plate served here was completely faultless – in fact, the best I’ve ever tried. It ticked every taste and texture box and more. My only complaint was that there was a little too much, and that’s only because I couldn’t help polishing it off and then subsequently already felt full. My friend’s delicate slices of duck were also delicious - a great way to start.
Next up, my tuna nicoise was not the usual chucked together salad leaf affair – it was a beautifully presented plate of melt-in-the-mouth seared tuna, soft boiled egg, anchovies – which I don’t normally like, but tasted great - capers, fine green beans, and much more – fantastic! My friend’s 8oz steak was cooked to his requested med-rare, topped with buttery stilton and accompanied with some lovely chunky chips and baby leaf salad. Both dishes were perfectly seasoned and exceeded our expectations.
The dessert list was so inviting we both found space in our very full stomachs to sample some, my friend ordered a selection of cheeses - a good choice judging by the speed it was devoured - and I picked the white chocolate mousse topped with chilli and raspberry coulis – it came served in a cocktail glass and the hot chilli aftertaste went fantastically well with the tangy berry and smooth chocolate.
After an Espresso, we explored the rest of Lost Society; another, less intimate, but very cosy looking dining area on the ground floor; the partially covered secret garden area off the side, with its own bar and pretty trees decorated with fairy lights. Up another flight of stairs, we found the DJ area, more buzzing rooms of 20s/30s and 40-somethings, dancing and generally having fun, and another well stocked bar. The layout with its hidden corners, mix of high and low ceilings and palette of warm hues and dark wood felt like we were at a house party in an enviable country abode. It would be a great place to meet up with a group of friends, and for special occasions you can hire areas too. A list of upcoming events, visiting DJs, cocktail-making classes and theme nights such as Fondue Thursday can all be found on the website.
If Clapham isn’t your local area, getting here is relatively fuss-free – there’s a row of nearby taxis and the underground station is just ten minutes walk away - the welcoming atmosphere, friendly, knowledgeable staff and very un-commercial feel of Lost Society is well worth the trek. ...read more

“I went to this bar at the weekend, stumbled on it by chance as I'm not from the area. Would definitely head back to Clapham just to go there though - really nice food (I had the chicken with harissa sauce). Really impressed with the beer choice too. Top venue!”

“Really enjoyed Lost Society. Went there with a group for a friend's birthday - great cocktails - not too expensive either. Good music and love the Secret Garden-y bit.”

“After visiting Lost Society for the first time, we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. The staff were very, very friendly and it was a pleasure to be in such a lovely setting. The themed rooms were all so very different and although I hear that it is very busy weekend nights, we found the it nicely buzzing. They have a huge cocktail list and their wines were very well priced. We will be going back.”

“Been a while since i have been to Lost, used to go a lot, but moved away. Got to say, still one of the best places around. For overall service, drinks, friendliness and a good time... .of course you get chavs, in there, you also get rugby boys and girls. Hey, its Clapham, there is a very braod mix of faces, otherwise it would be pretty boring, No?
Its a shame there are not more places around that offer such a good'package', without being up their own bottoms! Highly recommended!”

“I went here for birthday drinks on saturday and was really really disappointed! I rang to book about a week before and was told that i couldn't book an area for drinks which was absolutely fair enough. So i asked what time i should get there by and they said 8 to avoid queuing. So i headed over with a friend at about 7.30 to grab a table. When we arrived it wasn't too busy but there was only a couple of tables left.... oh and one big table reserved for drinks! Having got there early to grab a few seats for my mates we took a couple of tables and ordered a bite to eat. The waiterish guy was really nice and the service was quick but when the food arrived i was a little shocked at how poor it was considering the price. That aside i liked the place and the music (however, i did not like the chav's that suddenly made there way in and over crowded the bar!). Since the service seemed so nice i asked another guy working there if it was ok to take up two tables as i had about 20 people arriving shortly. I asked nicely, i was polite, i was excited because it was my birthday and this man was darn well rude and arrogant. He stood there in his ridiculous bowling shirt and pretty much said 'do one'! He really did not care if we were there or not. It seems to me that this place has become so busy and popular that they don't really care about who is there or about being polite to people. By 8.15 the place was pretty full and lots of my mates were stuck in the queue outside which was already ”

“We were a group of five very lovely ladies who wanted a girls night out somewhere with a cocktail list to die for and we had heard Lost Society was just the place. We presumed that we would be fine if we arrived at 8.15pm but that’s where the trouble began as we encountered by a queue. The queue wasn’t too long and being British and we don’t mind a well-managed effective queue – however this was anything but. We queued for an hour with very minimal movement whilst a large number of random people seemed to be able to waft in with a bit of a wink and a kiss (in the most fake of all manners) for the door staff. We reached the front of the queue by 9pm rather disillusioned but determined to sit it out after so much time invested. Then movement ground to a halt and we were informed of a one in one out policy (meanwhile large numbers of people ‘popped’ out with a stamp on their hand many not even returning). A while later 8 people left and we were then told that they now needed to wait for another two to leave so they could let in 2 people from the normal queue and two from the guest list queue at a time. 15 minutes later 6 people from the guest list queue were allowed to enter whilst we remained in the cold contrary to the promise. Another 15 minutes and we finally were granted entry at nearly 10pm!! To add insult to injury we were charged a £5 entry fee although we had noted many other people had not been required to pay this (probably you only have to pay after 10pm?). Once insi”

“Decor was good and the man on the door was friendly. However the bar was overpopulated with raucous twentysomethings who looked as if they were on a night out from essex. The meal was extremely disappointing. The resaurant was rather cramped. The starter had clearly been made earlier in the day as the fois gras terrine had been standing on the toast for hours which was now soggy and soft. The small steak was over-cooked for medium as requested was no particular cut and plonked on top of the chips along with some very poor sauce. I was served better meals when I was in school. During the meal on a couple of occasions I dropped my napkin and when the waiter picked it up for me he handed it back to me instead of replacing it, on the other occasion I picked it up myself.
The only redeeming feature was the price, just under £60 for two courses and a bottle of reasonable wine for 2 people, but it honestly felt like we were eating motorway service station food rather than in a restaurant. We couldn't bear to stay for a dessert and left after 2 courses. We won't be returning and don't recommend Lost Society to others. The music was ok but was usually drowned by the brash cacophony of the wideboy and bimbo clientele.”

“Over 20 work colleagues and I came on Friday night 27.10.06 (on my recommendation)... the bar got too crowded, which is not necessarily a bad thing... however the bar staff got really aggressive, behaved in a rude and uninviting manner... lets be plain - we were spending shed loads of cash behind the bar! I was verbally humiliated by one of the bar staff for taking a cocktail off the mat on the bar before being told I could (the cocktail had been made and I didn't realise I was at the school canteen hatch!)... overall disappointing and with many bars that become successful the initial charm is lost and the ugly money making machine grinds nosily into action! we won't be back…”

“Only venue south of the river to get 41/2 out of 5 stars in the Difford cocktail guide. Thought I would try it out, wow over 8 cocktails all made to perfection. Went on a Thursday night, was busy and had a fab night. Worth checking out!!”

“It was the ideal location for my 30th bday - spacious and grown-up enough that I wasn't pressed against hordes of teenyboppers but glamorous enough to make me feel like I wasn't becoming middle-aged. The food was delicious, cocktails heavenly, and the waiters super-friendly - rare in a London bar. The different levels and rooms, including the leafy beer garden all have a different vibe, making it a slightly different experience each time you visit. If you haven't been before, go now!”
