Steam and Rye Review

Top 10 things you alls need to know about Steam & Rye:

1) Mah name is Obadiah J. Vanderlay III, distinguished pre-war railway magnate, patriot and man of letters from West Virginia, US of A. Last week ah was sent forwards in time, to the year 2014 of our Lord, to review the dandy new Steam & Rye restaurant in the City of London.

2) Yah see, Steam & Rye prides itself on being a faithful recreation of all things great and American, and as a bastion of American greatness myself, ah was delighted to take the assignment, and pick up some stock tips from the future in the process.

3) The main hall, a former bank just off Bishopsgate, certainly aims for Gatsby-esque glamour – reminiscent of Grand Central Station, only not quite so Grand.

4) The dimly-lit bar stretches along one side, and a faux-locomotive offers raised seating space on the other, with plenty of standing room in between for the after-work herd. There are also several private rooms, for senatorial pow-wows, Masonic conferences, etc.

5) Flags of the USA and lesser countries hang over both doors, and an operational mechanical bull is often wheeled out to great acclaim. Course, ah do mah rodeo-ing with live bulls, but t’ain’t everyone can handle the real thing.

6) Ah did not care for the upside-down replicas of the Statue of Liberty though – that’s darn disrespectful of our glorious Nation’s gatekeeper and ah nearly caused a public disturbance tryin’ to set them right.

7) The venue’s soundtrack proved a disappointment, forsakin’ the rich musical tapestry of mah homeland – jazz, blues and country & western - for so-called modern-day “pop-u-lar music”.

8) Mondays and Wednesdays at Steam & Rye mean “all-you-can-eat” shrimp and rib – satisfyin’, if a little run-of-the-mill. The remainin’ fare is pure Americana: crab cakes, pulled pork, burgers and Canadian lobsters (a perfunctory nod to our friends in the Great White North).

9) Ah found the bar’s rye-based cocktails a little weak for mah constitution, although ah did enjoy the Prescription Julep, with bourbon, Hennessey and peach juice, which was served with a bottle of pills and a medical scrip.

10) Overall, ah was not overly impressed by Steam & Rye’s Americana; although ah can certainly see the vicarious appeal to London folk who have never witnessed mah great Nation’s manifold pleasures first-hand, may Gawd have mercy on their heathen souls.
