1901 Review
Book a table at 1901
1901 is featured in these Guides:
Walking into 1901 you’re immediately struck by a sense of history, not to mention grandeur. After overcoming our feeling of ‘do we really belong here’, we took a deep breath and entered the former dance hall that’s now part of the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel.
As we were ushered to our table by the attentive and informed waiting staff our eyes were caught by the impressively huge high ceiling with its centrepiece large glass dome hanging directly above the drinks bar sat in the middle of the room. As we took to our seats we observed the company we were keeping; a well-dressed couple enjoying a bottle of champagne, draped over one another in such a manner that eluded to a wedding anniversary. On the table next to us was another male-female meet, only this soiree had a far more business feel to it.
Etiquette is of the utmost importance at 1901: coats asked for, chairs politely pulled out. That said, it’s important to stress that despite their attentions the staff didn’t make us feel claustrophobic or overly pretentious.
Having been told that there was a choice of over 700 different wines we obviously looked a little perplexed and were kindly offered a suggested drop with reasoning as to why it would best go with our chosen dishes. After nodding agreement and muttering words along the lines of “yes that’s the drop I was thinking of going for” our esteemed wine connoisseur meandered off leaving us with the wine list. A quick scan and my jaw dropped at the price of one particular bottle that had a cool price tag in excess of £2,000. Thankfully, this was not the one that had been chosen for us and our anxiety relaxed after discovering a selection for those on a much tighter budget. Overall, dining at 1901 is certainly more treat than daily routine.
Our starters were both served on grey slate (had something fallen off the roof?) but it didn’t affect the taste and actually gave a much-needed urban feel. Eager to continue our dining adventure, our main courses arrived, consisting of pan fried halibut with saffron potatoes, plus poached and roasted veal that was so succulent simply resting a knife on the meat meant it carved its way through. With just enough space saved for dessert, we were again advised on what dessert wine would best accompany our choices and why.
Our experience at 1901 left us both completely satisfied and just a tad merry. It’s an ideal place to take a loved one for that special occasion or, with a separate lunch menu, even that business associate you’re trying to impress. From start to finish you are made to feel like the most important people in EC2 and it’s a great way to see and feel how the other half live.

“I went to 1901 for afternoon tea and had the Queen Victoria tea. It had an Indian influence: The chicken tikka sandwiches & mini naam bread made a refreshing change. The cocktail that came with it was amazing but the highlight for me was the warm scones and delicious selection of mini cakes.”

“My partner and I had Afternoon Tea here over the weekend. A peaceful retreat, with elegant service, high quality products, creative imagination, and amazing cocktails. Look out for deals and special offers to make this an affordable 'event'. Oh, and it's NOT in the West End, which makes a nice change.”

“Stunning! 1901 simply takes your breath away when you enter the room and look up at the ceiling. This is dining in style - the prices may be on the expensive side, but the food is delicious and the venue is just amazing. A real treat.”

“I stayed at the hotel for 3 days and visited the aurora restaurant twice: food was ok, but the service, oh my god, was awful! Very uptight with staff looking down on you; fortunately, the bar staff (especially the bar manager)and their concoctions were amazing, so welcoming and comforting!
My advice: skip the restaurant, head straight to the bar and dive into a (fabulous) martini.”
