Grand Union Brixton Review

In between the no man’s land of Brixton and Clapham north, a new bar has sprung up between the delectable cacophony of chicken shops, barber shops and timber yards. And the question on every south Londoner’s lips, “Is it really worth traipsing 17 minutes in the cold to get there?”

Well the answer is ‘yes’. And if you’re wearing high heels or have a sore toe, well, get a bus lazy-bones. Not being a natural stumble upon, The Grand Union has catered itself for somewhere you could happily wile away an evening in. With an eclectic décor that is contemporary but snug, it’s aesthetically pleasing without making you feel the need for your posh frock.

The inside is pleasing, but the outside is amazing. The garden looks like it’s had the Ground Force team round for the weekend. A beautiful concrete paradise with candles and strategically placed pebbles - being able to see the neighbouring billowing chimneys and ugly tower blocks over the fence only makes you feel smugger in your little wine filled Oasis.

The food is good too. There is a great selection of grub to share and hearty plates to enjoy. A special shout-out goes out to the burgers and there’s a massive selection of proper meaty bits of meat for you to choose from. There’s also an impressive cocktail menu for those wanting to make Brixton feel more tropical.

“When the sun is shining across London you'd be hard pressed to find a better beer garden anywhere than this. It is just insane. Enormous! And it has screen everywhere (good if there's a World Cup on), plus one enormous screen outside on the wall where I think they show movies once in a while. Outdoors bars and BBQs too. Beautiful people, Thai-style huts. It's all there people. Just bring on the sun.”

“We tried to have one quick drink here before heading home (we live locally) as we only had a babysitter until midnight - The head bouncer dragged us out after the girl on the door waivered the £5 entry fee as we were only going to be 20 minutes. What a wa**er! Such a shame as the venue itself is quite good compared to what else is offered in the local area.”
