Feng Sushi Review

Best for: exotic flavours of ice-cream and dining on pretty food while chatting about weddings.

Great: value for money; laidback sushi munching.

A short conversation between Wanda and Nemo in Feng Sushi’s fish tank (names have been changed to protect identities)

Wanda: Ah Mondays. Don’t you just hate Mondays? Pretty boring day, not many people watching us, and the staff look so grumpy (swims around in a figure of 8 to entertain herself)

Nemo: They’ve even run out of cocktails, what kind of restaurant runs out of cocktails? That would never have happened at Zuma, where I used to work.

Wanda: Oh look Nemo, we’ve got some customers. And those ladies do look thirsty for cocktails, like a lychee martini perhaps. They’re going to be disappointed.

Nemo: Ha, they’re ordering a bottle of wine instead. Alkies!

Wanda: Apparently Mondays are the new Fridays. I’m not sure how that works. Tuesdays are also the new Fridays. And Wednesdays. We should just call it Friday 1-5 rather than Monday-Friday.

(both rub their chins on the glass in contemplation)

Nemo: I do quite like it here though. The music’s chilled and laidback. My cousin works at Fish! across the road and says it’s busy and noisy there. There’s a nice serene vibe going on here.

Wanda: Well the clue’s in the name. I guess the feng shui of the wooden high tables and stools coupled with the lower tables and chairs works. And the pale blue walls, floor to ceiling windows, skylight at the back...

Nemo: (interrupts) And the purple wall over where the alkies, I mean young professional ladies, are sitting. I do like the purple wall with the big flower; it’s a nice touch.

Wanda: Look, the alkies have ordered their food. Edamame beans to start. Good choice, my friends. Nice and salty and fresh and mmmmm. They’re smiling. They must like it, high five!

(touch fins as they swim past each other)

Nemo: I bet they’re talking about weddings. See, one of them is wearing an engagement ring. She keeps touching her hair. Hmm, gotta have your hair half up, half down for the big day, right?

Wanda: He he, you’re such a girl.

Nemo: (in a deep manly fish voice) What, everyone likes weddings! Doesn’t make me a girl.

Wanda: OK OK. Whoah, all that food’s not for them is it?

Nemo: Hey lady! Never heard of a pre-wedding diet? A 16-piece veggie box, a sushi deluxe box, AND vegetable tempura AND spinach with sesame seeds. The pigs! It hardly fits on their table, mwahaha (clutches belly and laughs for a good few minutes with Wanda).

Wanda: Look, I know that expression, that means ‘oooh isn’t the sushi pretty’. And they’re chewing, they’re not gagging or spitting it out, that’s a good sign.

Nemo: Ah the one who’s not engaged has just said it’s ‘good value’. I’ve learnt that bit of lip-reading, because everyone seems to say it here. I think the engaged lady just said ‘the sushi’s rather standard’ but she’s also gobbling it up at fair fate, so she must like it.

Wanda: I like that the one who’s not engaged has ordered the veggie sushi. I like that, the girl’s got class. Sushi doesn’t have to mean fish.

Nemo: Yeh that’s true Wanda, although all our fish brethren here are sustainably sourced. It’s one of the top sustainable restaurants in the UK you know.

Wanda: OMG! She’s ordered dessert; what a little porker!

Nemo: Sweet chestnut and black sesame ice cream; good choice though. And two chocolate mochi.

Wanda: In other words, jelly balls covered in cocoa...

Nemo: ...That look like testicles.

Wanda: They’re doing their ‘that is amaaaaazing’ expression. I reckon they’re most impressed with the desserts out of their whole enormous ginormous meal.

Nemo: Shame they couldn’t drink cocktails and the staff weren’t that friendly. The staff obviously weren’t feeling the ‘Fridays are the new Mondays’ vibe. But they look pretty happy with their meal, not to mention a little chubbier!

Wanda: 10 o’clock Nemo. We’ve got some new victims: man in yellow trousers and lady in maxi dress. I wonder what they’ll eat.

Nemo: Order the edamame beans! Oh wait, they can’t hear me.

Feng Sushi Description

On the edge of London’s historic Borough food market by day this branch serves up take away food to some of the thousands of office workers who work nearby. By night it caters for residents who come in for the sushi and the atmosphere at this warm and cosy branch with its open fires and the tranquillity of its big fish tanks. The Borough branch has 3 special dishes only available at this restaurant: Teriyaki Salmon, a Clay Hot Pot Tuna, Shimjii and Rice and our MSC Hake noodle broth. On market days we do a fabulous Pork Ramen, from January will also be available in the restaurant.

Offering freshly-made sushi at affordable prices, Feng Sushi restaurants have established a popular reputation for providing London with classic sushi dishes, prepared with sustainable produce.

An ethically-focused chain of sushi restaurants, Feng Sushi sources its fish from within European borders. "Just excellent!! so tasty and very good services!! surely will come back!!" Which venue is this?

Hated

"Terrible customer service. No smile and a point to the table we were meant to be seated at instead of an escort like you would expect from a good quality restaurant. One waitress even said they were not..." Which venue is this?
