Picture this: A huge warehouse filled with wine, shiny decorative beads hanging from the ceiling, and a vase filled with Christmassy silver baubles; in May. What on Earth is going on?!
Well, it ended up being surprisingly apt for the mild May weather as Vinopolis decided to bring Christmas forward with a celebration of their wine selection and festive joyous spirit. The warehouse-cum-party venue invited Londoners to their newly refurbished gallery to demonstrate how to have a good time, any time of the year.
It was a blustery, windy evening and as I walked down the Bank End, there were signs pointing toward their “Retro Revival". Others, smartly dressed, also followed the magical mystery wine tour arrows and, en route, barrels of wine and numerous bottles of vintage were spotted.
So, to the party: a vast white room offered a wintry backdrop although a slight disappointment greeted me when I didn’t see a Christmas tree or Santa in the wintry wonderland. However, there were decorations hanging down into the room and the contemporary furniture (the sofa is something that Dali would be proud of), free flowing bar and curious looking stage seemed to please everyone enough.
The Retro Revival was a night to celebrate yester-year as mime artists (in bright pink and blue outfits) and waiters on rollerskates delivered a delightful sample of the venue's winter menu. Duck and lamb skewers, salmon finger foods and a whole dessert table of cakes made it feel like a Christmas party without grandmother asking for a dance at the end.
The party really got started when house band, The Lightyears, began playing 80s and 90s tracks. At this point, some people headed toward the dance floor. I had forgotten my dancing shoes at home so decided not to venture that way. Instead I headed for the door, remembering that it is indeed a school night and that Christmas is still some six months away. A wonderful trip down memory lane, Vinopolis certainly knows how to shake that festive spirit. If it’s like this in December, I’ll be sure to return for another beverage or two, wearing my dancing shoes.
